A father-daughter duo take a road trip from Delhi to their native state West Bengal in search of peace, but instead find themselves afflicted by their ancestral roots.

Piku (Deepika Padukone) is a twenty something working lady who has to give more attention to her father Bhashkor Banerjee (Amitabh Bachchan) than any other thing or aspect in her life. As a result, she is bereft of any other type of relationship or fun associated with it. Her life revolves around Bhashkor and he knows it. But Bhashkor is not receptive or sensitive to this fact, and always moves around sulking and complaining. Although they are bonded by a dynamic equilibrium, understanding each other and their shortcomings, Piku has always desired deep down a life free from these inhibitions. But owing to Bhashkor’s ill health, she has always put him first, above all her needs. At the end of the day, Piku knows that she loves her father and he loves her, too. Everything starts to change when one day they plan a road trip to West Bengal, to revisit their good old days. Hoping to cheer Bhashkor up, she plans everything beforehand so that his routine is not affected by their week-long trip. However, Rana Chaudhary (Irrfan Khan), driver of the car they had rented for the trip, enters their lives as a stranger. It is when Rana stops being a stranger that plays havoc in both Piku’s and Bhashkor’s lives as they simultaneously encounter their startling past.
