Based on the life of Odia freedom fighter Gour Hari Das, the film follows the man's 32-year long struggle to receive a Freedom Fighter's certificate from the Indian Government.
Gour Hari Das (Vinay Pathak) is a middle class man who works at the Khadi Commission and stays in Mumbai with his family. Das, who hails from Odisha, had been a freedom fighter during his teenage years and was also imprisoned for 90 days for being a part of the movement. This defines Gour and he considers this to be his identity. When a college denies admission to his son, due to lack of papers certifying Gour’s contribution to the freedom struggle, he sets out on a journey to seek the same. His wife Lakshmi (Konkona Sen Sharma), stands by him firmly, through thick and thin. However, Das who sets out on the mission, has no idea about the difficult journey that he is undertaking. He goes from door-to-door of officials and writes several letters to the concerned authorities, but in vain. Gour, who is a simpleton at heart, only wishes to be recognized for his efforts as it is the truth. Accompanying him on this journey, are journalists Rajiv (Ranvir Shorey) and Anita (Tannishtha Chatterjee). During his struggle that has already lasted for two decades, he is diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. What is the truth about Gour Hari Das and will it proved before it’s too late?
