Plot

Dilip (Rajpal Yadav), a rickshaw driver, loses his source of income as his rickshaw breaks down while transporting an employee to the Union Carbide pesticide plant in Bhopal. That a new plant is being built near their village comes across as good news to the daily wage workers. On the other hand, Motwani (Kal Penn), an independent journalist understands the perils of a chemical plant, and advocates against it. Nobody pays heed.When Dilip is randomly selected to work for Union Carbide, he sees it as a way out of his financial rut. When Motwani warns him that he will be affected by the harmful atmosphere that he works in, Dilip accuses him of being against industrialisation.Meanwhile, the India-head of Union Carbide suggests a cost-effective way to minimise the maintenance of the factory, which the the CEO of Union Carbide, Warren Anderson (Martin Sheen) approves without proper scrutiny. Anderson bribes the local politicians and gets government approval for this new proposal.Only Motwani suspects that there will be danger caused by poor safety standards, and he will soon be proven right.When Dilip is randomly selected to work for Union Carbide, he sees it as an opportunity. As the wage is higher than his previous job of rickshaw-riding, Dilip is now able to gift his wife and arrange a proper wedding for his sister. Therefore, when Motwani warns him that he will be affected by the harmful atmosphere that he works in, Dilip accuses him to be against industrialization. Meanwhile, the India-head of Union Carbide suggests a cost-effective way to minimize the maintenance of the factory, which the the CEO of Union Carbide, Warren Anderson (Martin Sheen) approves without scrutiny. Anderson bribes the local politicians and gets government approval for this new proposal of Indianizing the factory. Although the factory is a source of great income to its poverty-ridden workers, only Motwani suspects that there will be danger caused by low safety standards, which the villagers find out in a matter of weeks.
