The true story of human rights activist Shahid Azmi who was assassinated in Mumbai in 2010.

Shahid (Rajkummar Rao) runs away to Kashmir, after witnessing murders during the Bombay riots in 1993. He trains in a military camp for some time but returns to be with his family. He is wrongly arrested for allegedly conspiring against local politicians, after which, is sent to Tihar Jail in Delhi. Immediately after his acquittal, he studies law motivated by fellow ex-jail mate War Saab (Kay Kay Menon). Fed up of unscrupulous practices as an assistant under HC advocate Majeed Memon (Tigmanshu Dhulia), Shahid starts his own venture as an independent lawyer, with financial help from his brother Arif (Mohammed Zeeshan Ayyub). Following up on a previous case while under Memon, he contacts Mariam (Prabhleen Sandhu) and takes up her case which he eventually wins. He falls in love with her and later proposes to her. Owing to his own life experiences, he goes on to represent hapless individuals who mistakenly get entangled in terrorist activities, which becomes the basis of criticism from right wing activists. On the verge of winning a 2008 Mumbai terror attacks case, he gets shot by four assailants at his Mumbai office.
