A political satire that aims at focusing on the objectives of big industrialists like Harry and corrupt politicians like Chaudhari Devi to serve their own purpose while crushing the already downtrodden to further degradation.
Matru ki Bijlee revolves around 3 people: Harphool Singh Mandola aka Harry (Pankaj Kapur), his daughter Bijlee Mandola (Anushka Sharma) and Hukum Singh Matru aka Matru (Imran Khan). Harry is a wealthy, contemptuous businessman who wants to turn the Mandola village, which was named after his family, into an example of his success. But his dream can only be realised if the villagers agree to sell their land to the government at insanely low prices. While Harry is almost always calm, composed and sophisticated, he also enjoys the occasional drink. Whenever he is drunk, he turns into an advocate of equality for the villagers but immediately regrets this when sober. When he chooses not to drink, he hallucinates about a pink buffalo “Gulabo”, the mascot of the brand of alcohol he drinks. Bijlee Mandola is the only daughter of Harry. She lost her mother when she was young and now lives with her father in the Mandola village after completing her education in New Delhi and, later, Oxford. Both Harry and Chaudhari Devi (Shabana Azmi) seek to reduce their worries by getting their children married to each other. However, the secret advisor of the villagers proves to be the much needed roadblock in the saga. This marriage becomes the central seed of the story that brings twists and turns in the lives of Matru, Bijlee and Mandola!
