Inspired by the 1999 hit-and-run case of Sanjeev Nanda, Jolly LLB is a social satire on the law system of the country through the story of a small town lawyer Jolly, who takes up this case and battles against a highly successful lawyer Tejinder.

Jolly or Jagdish Tyagi (Arshad Warsi) is a small town lawyer who moves from Meerut to Delhi in search of a better career. He is insignificant and does not get any attention. He spots an opportunity to become famous, when he takes on the case of a rich Delhi kid that is accused of killing six pavement dwellers with his speeding car. He goes up against the legal giant Tejinder Rajpal (Boman Irani) who is defending the accused. His fiancée (Amrita Rao) encourages him to fight for the truth, despite Jolly initially undertaking the case to get some publicity. Rajpai uses all the tricks in the book, from bribery to physical assault, to try and scare Jolly from pursuing the case. But, Jolly fights on and proves that the small town player can take on a big city shark if they persist and believe in justice.
