Ram Leela, is a Bollywood-styled adaptation of William Shakespeare’s ‘Romeo and Juliet’, set in a small town in Gujarat. The lovers have to deal with conflict between their respective families and the repercussions of the scuffles between them.
In a Gujarati village, there are two rival clans - the Rajari and Sanera clans - that have been at odds with each other for the past 500 years. Today, they spend their days in conflict on the streets fighting over competing criminal empires. The film begins with a violent scene between the two clans over a small incident. Meghji (Abhimanyu Singh), a Rajari head, sets out to kill Bhavani (Gulshan Devaiah) who is a Suneda, after the latter tries to kill the former's son. Ram (Ranveer Singh) is the heir apparent to the poorer of the two clans who hates gun violence and prefers to hang out with his friends and sell DVDs. He interferes in the fight and saves the day, only to be later reprimanded by his elder brother Meghji. One fine day, Ram meets Leela (Deepika Padukone), who is from the opposite clan and falls in love with her instantly. The feeling is mutual and now the lovers have to deal with the conflict that will arise as a result of their union. The intense drama of this love saga has its highs and lows. During Dusshera, as the Ramlila parade is ending, many Rajari members are killed and the village is on the brink of war. Ram and Leela are faced with a very difficult situation, as their love story could be all but over.
