A closet homosexual, a failed actor, a young boy who loves to cross-dress and a common man who struggles to meet Amitabh Bachchan make their appearances in four short stories to showcase the complex relationship between cinema and real life.

Four great directors of present-day Bollywood, Karan Johar, Dibakar Banerjee, Zoya Akhtar and Anurag Kashyap, unite in Bombay Talkies to showcase the complex relationship between cinema and real life. The first story has Rani Mukherjee and Randeep Hooda playing an urban married couple. Rani works at a top publishing firm while Hooda is a senior news anchor. When a new intern at Rani’s office, Saqib Salim, storms his way into their peaceful lives, Hooda finds himself struggling with a sexual identity crisis. Nawazuddin Siddiqui stars as the main lead in the second story. A failed actor, he finds it difficult to bring home a regular income. He bags the chance of a lifetime when he is selected to do a five-second scene with a famous hero. A young boy, Naman Jain, loves to dress up like his favourite heroine Katrina Kaif. His conservative father is horrified by his son’s aspirations. Vijay, an ordinary man from Allahabad travels to Mumbai to fulfil his father’s last wishes and meet Amitabh Bachchan. He realises that it is not easy for a common man to walk in through the hallowed gates of ‘Prateeksha’ and meet the Big B himself.
