An Indian housewife vows to learn and speak fluent English in two weeks in order to prove her significance in the lives of her husband and children.

Shashi Godbole (Sridevi) is a housewife who runs a small business selling sweet dishes. Due to her poor English skills, she is treated with disrespect and taken for granted by her daughter and husband Satish (Adil Hussain). Shashi’s older sister invites her to New York for helping her in her daughter’s wedding. Once in New York, she is coaxed by her niece to learn English. Shashi pursues a two-week course with a bunch of people from different parts of the world. Over the course, she befriends and forms a group with them, enjoying and having fun as they learn the universal language of communication. A colleague gets infatuated with Shashi, but after losing her stand briefly, she restrains from taking the relationship ahead, citing her beautiful marriage and family. She prepares and carries out self-studies on English, at the same time managing the wedding preparations. On the wedding day, Shashi speaks to her niece’s American spouse in fluent English and gives the couple advice on marriage, stunning not only her colleagues and other guests but also her husband and daughter. At the end of her speech, her professor officially announces Shashi as a certified English speaker.
