When Bollywood superstar Sahir Khan comes to a village to shooting an upcoming film, the inhabitants of the village go berserk in an attempt to grab a glance of him.

Billu (Irrfan Khan) is a poor barber who owns a small, decrepit shop in the junction of his village. His salon is equipped with the most basic things and is often derided by fellow villagers. His family consisting of his wife Bindiya (Lara Dutta) and two children also take potshots at him for being the greatest miser in all of village. But only Billu himself knows his situation and his struggle to make two ends meet. One day, the news of the arrival of Bollywood superstar Sahir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) spreads the village. Shopkeepers, politicians, school staff and every other inhabitant of the village go bananas at the news as he is revered for his blockbuster films. When Billu learns about the news, he narrates an old story to his wife. He tells her that Sahir was his childhood friend and that they shared a great camaraderie before Sahir left for Mumbai in search of bigger opportunities. This revelation mars the villagers as everyone tries to get hold of Billu. The people who had previously ridiculed Billu’s frugal lifestyle now started appreciating him and helping him in different ways, even renovating his salon. All with the intention of meeting Sahir Khan through him. Billu refuses to introduce people to Sahir Khan as he is not sure whether Sahir will recognise him after all these years. Hearing this alibi, people again start deriding him. They even accuse him of false talk which is followed by a police arrest and an eventual acquittal. But when Sahir himself recites a story at a school’s annual meet, the people of the village start to realise their mistake.
