With a career spanning over five decades, Yash Johar was a veteran Indian film producer and the founder of Dharma Productions who is responsible for producing some blockbusters like Dostana, Agneepath, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai among others. Born in Amritsar, Punjab, Yash Johar began his career at Ajanta Arts under the guidance of Sunil Dutt in the year 1952. He was then part of movies such as Mujhe Jeene Do (1963) and Yeh Rastey Hain Pyar Ke (1963). This was followed by his stint at Devanand’s Navketan Films, where he became a part of the blockbuster movie Guide (1985). This association continued on movies such as Jewel Thief (1967), Prem Pujari (1970) and Hare Rama Hare Krishna (1971). He unveiled his own production house by the name Dharma Productions in the year 1976. His first movie under this banner was the action thriller Dostana (1980) and went on to producefew other films including Agneepath (1990), Gumrah (1993) and Duplicate (1998). However, Johar’s Dharma Productions came in the limelight with the romantic comedy movie Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), which was also his son, Karan Johar’s first directorial venture. Two other popular movies under this banner included Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham (2001) and Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003) the last three being all time blockbusters. Yash had been suffering from cancer. However, he died of a chest infection in June 2004, at the age of 75 years. He is survived by his wife, Hiroo Yash Johar and son, Karan Johar who has successfully carried his legacy.
