Considered to be amongst the filmmakers who has revolutionised filmmaking, Vishal Bhardwaj is an Indian film director, producer, writer, music composer and playback singer who is the recipient of six National Film Awards for films like The Blue Umbrella, Omkara, Ishqiya and Haider. Born in Bijnor and brought up in Meerut, Vishal Bhardwaj moved to Delhi in his teenage and pursued his graduation from Hindu College, Delhi University. With small stints as a harmonium player and a job in CBS music company, Delhi, Vishal was recommended by a friend to veteran lyricist and filmmaker, Gulzar, who then offered him to compose music for his film, Maachis (1996), for which Vishal received the Filmfare R.D. Burman Award. After giving successful music in films like Chachi 420 (1998) and Satya (1998) he received the National Film Award for Best Music Direction for his music in the film, Godmother (1999). After a successful stint as a composer, he made his directorial debut with the film, Makdee (2002) which was also written and produced by him. The film was critically acclaimed and commercially successful along with winning 2nd Place at the Chicago Children’s Film Festival. Vishal has always been inspired by Shakespearean works and was evident when he adapted Macbeth for his second directorial, Maqbool (2003) which is touted to be one of the best films ever and won the IIFA’s Technical Excellence Award for Best Dialogue and Screenplay. His next film, The Blue Umbrella (2005) won the National Award for Best Children’s Film. his first out-and-out commercial film, Omkara (2006), an adaptation of Othello, which featured an ensemble cast. The film was widely acclaimed and turned out to be a major commercial success along with winning the National Film Award-Special Jury Award. His next film, Kaminey (2009) was also a major success followed by 7 Khoon Maaf (2011) and Matru Ki Bijlee ka Mandola (2013) which fared poorly at the box office. His directorial film, Haider (2014) was a comeback to success for Vishal as the film received widespread critical acclaim and was commercially successful too along with winning two National Awards including Best Music Direction and Best Dialogue. As a producer, he has produced several films under the VB Pictures Banner that include Ishqiya (2010) for which he also received the National Award for Best Music Direction, 7 Khoon Maaf (2011), Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013), Ek Thi Daayan (2013), Dedh Ishqiya (2014) and Haider (2014). He has also sung songs for films like Omkara (2006), U Me Aur Hum (2008), Striker (2010) and Haider (2014) among others. His latest projects include composing music for Drishyam (2015), Talvar (2015) which is also written by him and his next directorial, Rangoon (2016). Vishal is married to playback singer, Rekha Bhardwaj, whom he met during his graduation days.
