Biography

With a career spanning over four decades, Vinod Khanna is a veteran Indian film actor, producer and politician who has appeared in over 141 films throughout his career. Born in Peshawar, Vinod Khanna along with his family shifted to Mumbai after the partition. He attended different schools due to shifting from Mumbai to Delhi and then to Nashik, graduating from Sydenham College, Mumbai. Growing up with three sisters and a brother, Vinod made his debut in Bollywood as a villain with the film, Man Ka Meet (1968) and went on to do negative roles in Purab aur Paschim (1970), Sachaa Jhutha (1970), Aan Milo Sajna (1970), Mera Gaon Mera Desh (1971) and Elaan (1971). He was one of those actors to start a rare trend of starting career with villainous roles and going on to play the hero which commenced with Hum Tum aur Woh (1971), Mere Apne (1971), Achanak (1973) followed by further lead roles in Qaid (1975),Inkaar (1978) and Qurbani (1980), the highest grossing film of that year and a supporting role in Haath Ki Safai (1975) for which he won the FIlmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. He later starred in dual hero films like Shankar Shambhu (1976), Hera Pheri (1976), Amar Akbar Anthony (1977), Aakhri Daku (1978), Ek aur Ek Gyarah (1981) and Rajput (1982) among others. After a sabbatical for five years following the spiritual leader, Osho, Vinod made his comeback to films with Insaaf (1987) and went on to work in several films like Lekin.. (1990), CID (1990), Dharam Sankat (1991), Khoon ka Karz (1991), Parampara (1992), Insaniyat Ka Devta (1993), Ekka Raja Rani (1994), Janam Kundli (1995), Muqadama (1996), Himalay Putra (1997) which became his debut as a producer and also starred his son, Akshaye Khanna. Kranti (2002), Risk (2007), Pakistani film Godfather (2007), Wanted (2009), 99 (2009), Dabanng (2010), Dabanng 2 (2012), Ramaiya Vastavaiya (2013) and Hero (2014) among others. Vinod is also the recipient of the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award (1999), Stardust Lifetime Achievement Awards (2005) and Zee Cine Award for Lifetime Achievement (2007). His latest project include a role in the ensemble cast film, Dilwale (2015). Vinod was initially married to Geetanjali (1971-1985) and has two sons with her, Akshaye Khanna and Rahul Khanna, both of them actors. He married Kavita (1990-present) and has a son, Sakshi and a daughter, Shraddha.
