Biography

Critical acclaim has followed this National Award winning actress since her debut film, Parineeta. She is best known for portraying strong female protagonists on-screen and has a string of hits to her name like Ishqiya, The Dirty Picture and Kahaani. Vidya Balan was born in Ottapalam, Kerala to P. R. Balan, the Executive Vice-President of Digicable and his wife, Saraswathy Balan. Her sister, Priya Balan, works in advertising and her second cousin, Priyamani, is also an actress. Vidya was raised in Chembur, Mumbai and attended St. Anthony’s Girl’s High School. Soon after, she enrolled at St. Xavier’s, Mumbai and graduated with sociology. She followed it up with a masters from the University of Mumbai. Vidya had her very first acting role in the 1995 sitcom Hum Paanch. She subsequently featured in various television commercials and music videos. In the year 2003, she made her debut in Bengali films with the drama Bhalo Theko as the protagonist and in 2005, came her moment of glory when she was praised heavily for her work in her first Hindi film Parineeta followed by another successful comedy film Lage Raho Munna Bhai in 2006. These were followed by films like Hey Babyy (2007) and Kismat Konnection (2008) which did not do very well at the box office. The negative criticism did not dampen Vidya’s spirits and she went on to do five such films in five different genres back to back that gave her career a new life. These include the critically acclaimed drama film Paa (2009), the black comedy Ishqiya (2010), the semi- autobiographical thriller No One Killed Jessica (2011), the biopic The Dirty Picture (2011) and the thriller Kahaani (2012). Her role of Silk Smitha in Dirty Picture is considered her most intense performance so far for which she was bestowed with the Best Actress National Film Award by the Government of India. Vidya Balan is trained in Carnatic music and has studied dance forms like Kathak and Bharatnatyam. She has often been criticized by the media for her fluctuating weight and dressing sense. However, she has also been a popular choice for designer Sabyasachi Mukherjee. Besides acting in films, Vidya promotes and supports humanitarian causes that includes nutrition, children’s education and the empowerment of women. For her attempts to empower women, she was awarded with The Prabha Khaitan Puraskar in 2012. In August, 2013 she served as the grand marshal of the India Day parade held in New York. She is married to Siddharth Roy Kapur, the CEO of UTV Motion Pictures. Actors Aditya Roy Kapur and Kunaal Roy Kapur are her brothers-in-law.
