Biography

Debuting with Sawaariya, Sonam went on to feature in a series of films before finding success with I Hate Luv Storys. She then impressed audiences with her performance in Raanjhanaa and Bhaag Milkha Bhaag. Sonam is the daughter of veteran Hindi film actor Anil Kapoor and ex-model Sunita Kapoor. She has two younger siblings Rhea and Harshvardhan Kapoor. Filmmaker Surinder Kapoor is her paternal grandfather and she is the niece of Boney Kapoor and Sanjay Kapoor. Sonam’s cousins are actors Arjun Kapoor and Mohit Marwah. Kapoor attended the Arya Vidya Mandir in Juhu and later enrolled at the United World of South East Asia in Singapore, where she studied arts and theatre. Soon after, she attended the University of East London, where she studied economics and political science. When she enrolled at the University of Mumbai for a correspondence bachelor’s degree, she chose the same subjects. She began her career as an assistant director to Sanjay Leela Bhansali with the film Black (2005). After she decided to be an actress, she lost almost 35kgs as she was obese as a teenager. She made her acting debut in 2007 opposite Ranbir Kapoor in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saawariya which did not do well at the Box Office. She won the Stardust Superstar of Tomorrow Award for her film Saawariya in 2008. Post Saawariya she featured in the off-beat drama Delhi-6 (2009) which again flopped at the Box Office although she garnered praise for her performance. Her first commercial success was I Hate Luv Storys (2010) in which she starred opposite Imran Khan. It was followed by Aisha (2010) which was a decent success at the Box Office. In the year 2011, Kapoor featured in Thank You and Mausam and in Players in 2012. Kapoor was much appreciated for her performance in the commercially successful romantic film Raanjhanaa (2013) and biographical sports film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag(2013). In recent times, she starred in films like Khoobsurat (2014) and Dolly ki Doli (2015). Her upcoming films include Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015) with Salman Khan, Neerja (2016) and Battle for Bittora (2016). Kapoor also participates in stage shows for award ceremonies and is a celebrity endorser for various brands and products. She is the spokesperson for the French beauty brand L’Oreal. Apart from this, she has endorsed brands like Electrolux, Lux, Colgate, Signature and Mont Blanc. In 2012, Kapoor asked her fans to donate to the Ogaan Cancer Foundation for her birthday. She has also contributed to Smile Foundation and is frequently associated with social causes. Kapoor is a trained Kathak dancer and has learnt classical music and Latin dance. In 2009, she became the first Indian actress to wear dresses by Chanel. Her fashion sense and dresses have attracted much attention and have made her a worldwide figure for fashion. She resides in Mumbai.
