Biography

Director and producer, Shoojit Sircar directed his first film in 2005, Yahaan, which brought him to the spotlight. He went on to deliver more hits like Vicky Donor, madras cafe and Piku, which were also critically acclaimed. With a background in theatre, Shoojit Sircar is an Indian director and producer who has seen success in both the advertising domain and the art of filmmaking. He was born into a Bengali Hindu family in Barrackpore and studied in Kendriya Vidyalaya. He is associated with Rising Sun Films and has directed award winning commercials for Saffola, Apsara Pencils, 2G, Maruti Wagon R, Dove, Cadbury, Fair and Lovely and other brands. His films speak another jubilant story of his success. For his directorial debut Yahaan (2005) he won the Indian Competition Special Jury Award at Osian's Cinefan Festival of Asian and Arab Cinema. He won the National Film Award in the Best Popular film category for Vicky Donor (2012) where he demonstrated the social taboos attached to artificial insemination through the eyes of a sperm donor. He deals with a variety of themes marrying stark realism with quirky dark-comic style of narrating them. His film Madras Cafe (2013) is a thriller which deals in political espionage and surrounds itself with the events leading up to and around the Sri lankan Civil War and the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. His most recent film, ‘Piku’ deals with a septuagenarian and his obsession with his bowel movements. His upcoming films include Runningshaadi.com and Agra ka Daabra. He is married to Jhuma Sircar and lives in Mumbai
