Shankar mahadevan is an Indian music director, composer and singer who is part of the music director trio Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. They are best known for their music in Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara, Don and Dil Chahta Hai. Originally hailing from Kerala, Shankar Mahadevan was born in Chembur, Mumbai into a Tamil Iyer family. He underwent training in Hindustani classical and Carnatic music when he was a child, and started playing the veena at the young age of five. He trained under the Marathi composer Shrinivas Khale. After completing his schooling from Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School and SIES College, Sion, Shankar graduated in the year 1988 as Software Engineer from Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology in Navi Mumbai. He worked for Oracle and Leading Edge Systems for a while before turning his attention towards music and taking it up as his profession. In 1998, Shankar released his first album, Breathless, which was an instant hit. He then joined Ehsaan and Loy to form the trio that would compose some of the most popular numbers in Bollywood. Being well versed in Marathi, Urdu, Tamil, Hindi and English, Mahadevan has composed and sung in many films across regions. His collaboration with A.R Rahman for the Tamil movie Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000) earned him his first National Award as a playback singer. He also bagged the same award twice more for the song Maa from Taare Zameen Par (2007) and Bolo Na from Chittagong (2012). Shankar had the honour of working with some of the stalwarts of the industry like Ilaiyaraaja, Mani Sharma, Devan, Yuvan Shankar Raja and S. Thaman. As a trio, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy won the National Award in 2004 for composing the music of Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003). Some of their most memorable compositions were for films like Rockford (1999), Dil Chahta Hai (2001), Bunty Aur Babli (2005), Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (2006), Rock On!! (2008), Wake Up Sid (2009), Patiala House (2011), 2 States (2014) and Dil Dhadakne Do (2015). Apart from Hindi films, Shankar has composed for numerous Tamil and Marathi films. The trio has also earned numerous Filmfare and Star Screen Awards for their compositions, among other prestigious awards. They have also composed the music for the upcoming films Katti Batti (2015) and Ghayal Once Again (2015). Apart from films, the trio have also composed jingles for brands like Coca Cola, Pepsi, Brooke Bond, ICICI and Lux. He founded a music academy, named Shankar Mahadevan Academy, which offers Indian music lessons online for students all over the world. Shankar is married to Sangeeta and they have two sons, both being singers. The elder son Siddharth made his singing debut with the film Bhaag Milkha Bhaag (2013) in the song Zinda (2013). His younger son Shivam made his debut as a singer with the film Dhoom 3 (2013 ) in the song Bande Hain Hum Uske.
