Biography

hakti Kapoor, a revered actor in the industry, has to his credit an array of both comic and villainous roles, that have been highly appreciated by audiences. Best remembered for his role in Raja Babu, he has also proved his mettle as an actor with negative roles in Hero and Qurbani. Shakti Kapoor was born as Sunil Kapoor in Delhi. His father ran a tailoring business in Connaught Place. Sunil Dutt changed his name to Shakti as "Sunil" didn’t sound menacing enough for a villain. Dutt’s casting of Kapoor in Rocky (1981) as the villain, brought him to the limelight after Qurbani (1980). The success of Qurbani and Rocky was followed by Himmatwala and Hero in 1983, which established him as the favoured villain. Chaalbaaz (1989), Khiladi (1992), Main Khiladi Tu Anari 1994, Coolie No. 1 (1995), Judwaa (1997) are some of his hits. Although Shakti Kapoor stepped into the industry in 1975 with Do Jasoos, his breakthrough came five years and a lot of supporting roles later. Along with portraying villainous roles, he also stepped into the shoes of the comedian with equal ease. He won his first Best comedian Filmfare Award for playing Nandu in Raja Babu (1994). His notable comedies include Aankhen (1993), Andaz Apna Apna (1994), Tohfa (1984), Baap Numbri Beta Dus Numberi (1990), Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999), Bhagam Bhag (2006) and Hungama (2003). Millions have feared him for his villainy, loved him for his comic buffoonery and admired him for his nonstop entertainment for over three decades. He has shown his mettle with equal finesse in both negative and positive roles. He has also acted in some Bengali films. Kapoor captained the home of the famous reality show Bigg Boss (season 5) for the first two weeks and was evicted in the fourth week of the show. He has also been a part of a musical comedy with Padmini Kolhapuri, his sister-in-law. He has acted in more than 400 films. His most profligate pairing had been with Kader Khan in around 100 comic and villainous roles. Over the years, his dialogues from some films have been the source of entertainment for many like - "Main Nanha Sa Chota Sa Bachcha Hoon" (Chaalbaaz) and "Nandu Sabka Bandhu" (Raja Babu). He has also been the victim of an unproven casting couch controversy in 2005. Shakti Kapoor is married to Shivangi, sister of actress Padmini Kolhapure. He has two children Siddhant and actress Shraddha Kapoor.
