Biography

Popularly hailed as the chocolate boy of Bollywood, Shahid won hearts with his debut film Ishq Vishk and evolved through the years into one of the finest actors of the industry. He impressed critics and audiences alike with films like Jab We Met, Kaminey and Haider. Born to actors Pankaj Kapur and Neelima Azeem, Shahid spent his early childhood in Delhi after his parents separated. His grandparents were journalists for a Russian magazine. His step-fathers are Rajesh Khattar and Ustad Raza Ali Khan. From his mother’s side, he has a half-brother Ishaan Khattar. He is also the step-son of Pankaj Kapur’s second wife, Supriya Pathak, making him half-brother to Ruhaan and Sanah Kapur. While in Delhi, he attended Gyan Bharati School. After moving to Mumbai at the age of 10, he attended Rajhans Vidyalaya and graduated from Mithibai College. When he was in school, he joined Shiamak Davar’s dance institute and went on to appear in many films as a supporting dancer. He appeared in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) and Taal (1999). Later, he would also join the institute as an instructor. In 1998, he also assisted his father on the television series, Mohandas B.A.L.L.B. Kapoor also appeared a Pepsi commercial alongside Shah Rukh, Kajol and Rani. He also became very popular with music videos by Aryans and Pankaj Udhas. Shahid entered Bollywood in 2005 with the romantic drama Ishq Vishk. It brought him his first Filmfare Best Male Debut award. Fida (2004) followed this success but it couldn’t perform well. It was followed by with flops like Dil Maange More (2004), Shikhar (2005), 36 China Town (2006) and Chup Chup Ke (2006). Vivah (2006) became a hit but Fool n Final (2007) failed. Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We Met (2007) opposite star Kareena Kapoor made him into a superstar overnight. Kaminey (2009) brought him lauds and once again established his intensity as an actor. In recent times, he has appeared in films like Phata Poster Nikla Hero (2013), R… Rajkumar (2013) and the critically acclaimed Haider (2014). Haider also won him the Filmfare Award for the best actor. Shahid’s upcoming films include Shaandaar (2015), where he will share screen space with his father, Pankaj Kapur, Farzi (2016), Udta Punjab (2016) and Rangoon (2016). He supports brands like Clear shampoo, Men’s skin care range of Vaseline, pioneer car stereos and Elf Moto. He was potentially saved from death in the Indian Ocean Tsunami of 26 Dec. 2004 just by luck. A Chance cancellation of his scheduled shooting programme from 24 Dec. at Phuket, Thailand saved him while the hotel he was booked into was swept away in the Tsunami on 26th Dec. Shahid was in a relationship with actress Kareena Kapoor but the duo parted ways. In 2015, he tied the knot with Delhi-based Mira Rajput.
