Biography

With twenty-seven years of experience in the industry, Shah Rukh Khan or SRK, is one of the most eminent actors in the industry. The Padma Shri award winner has more than 200 awards to his credit and is often hailed as King Khan, for his vast fan following across the world. Born to Meer Taj Mohammad Khan and Lateef Fatima, Khan spent his childhood days in Mangalore where his grandfather, Ifthikar Ahmed, was the chief engineer of the port. Shah Rukh’s father, who is a Pashtun, was actively involved in the Indian struggle for independence. He hailed from Peshawar and moved to Delhi just before the Partition of India. The family settled in Rajendra Nagar, where Meer had several businesses like restaurants. They lived in rented apartments and Shah Rukh attended St. Columba’s School. He shone in both academics and sports like hockey and cricket and was awarded the school’s highest honour, titled The Sword of Honour. From his school days, he was involved in plays and earned recognition among his friends for his imitation of actors. He would later pursue this passion at Delhi’s Theatre Action Group and National School of Drama. While training under Barry John at TAG, Khan also enrolled at Hansraj College and graduated with Economics in 1988. To pursue his studies, he enrolled at Jamia Millia Islamia for a Master’s degree but fate had other plans for him and he soon quit to pursue a career in acting. Shah Rukh started his career as an actor with a television series called Dil Dariya (1989). However the delay in the release made Fauji (1989), his debut on television. He played the lead role as Abhimanyu Rai and soon earned great reviews from critics and audiences alike. He followed it up with Aziz Mirza’a Circus (1989-90) and Mani Kaul’s Idiot (1991). He also appeared in the English tele film In Which Annie Gives It Those Ones (1989). Having lost his father in 1980, Shah Rukh was by his mother’s side till her last days in 1991 and moved to Mumbai post her death. In the meanwhile, his sister Shahnaz Lalarukh also became depressed and Shah Rukh undertook her responsibilities. In 1991, he signed Hema Malini’s directorial debut, Dil Aashna Hai but a delay in the release, made Deewana (1992) his first release. He bagged the Filmfare Award for the best debut with the film and followed it up with films like Chamatkar (his first film as the lead), Dil Aashna Hai and Raju Ban Gaya Gentleman in the same year. The following year, he stepped into the shoes of the villain for the films Baazigar and Darr. His portrayal of the anti-hero in both earned him much praise and the nomination for the best performance in a negative role in Darr. Baazigar earned him the Filmfare Award for the best actor. In 1994, he bagged the Filmfare Critics Award for the film Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa. In the same year, he also won the Filmfare Award for the best actor in a negative role for Anjaam. Shah Rukh stepped into the shoes of the romantic hero for Aditya Chopra’s Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995). The film was a blockbuster to say the least and established Khan as the new romantic hero. He broke the stereotypes of the well-built, crime-fighting heroes and emerged as the soft-spoken, funny and emotional hero, a role that he would portray in many of his upcoming films. It was also the first of many of his collaborations with actress Kajol. He played the romantic hero in films like Dil To Pagal Ha (1997), Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998), Mohabbatein (2000), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Devdas (2002) and Veer-Zaara (2004). Post 2003, he decreased the number of films he signed, owing to severe back pain and multiple surgeries. He also earned the critics’ praise for his films like Swades (2004) and Chak De! India (2007). Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012), Chennai Express (2013) and Happy New Year (2014) are some of his latest films. His upcoming films include Raees and Fan, which will be released in 2016. SRK is a producer and started Dreamz Unlimited with actress Juhi Chawla and Aziz Mirza. After a few films, they parted ways and Shah Rukh established Red Chillies Entertainment, a production house, with his wife, Gauri Khan. He is also an awards ceremony host, and a stage performer. He was conferred the honour of Padma Shri by the Govt. of India in 2005. Forbes India calls him Shah Rukh.Inc as India’s biggest brand performer. He has endorsed brands like Pepsi, Nokia, Hyundai, TAG Heuer and Lux. He co-owns the highly valued IPL team -- Kolkata Knight Riders. He is a silent philanthropist. UNESCO has honoured him for his work with health care relief fund and children’s education with ‘pyramide con marni’ award. National Geographic magazine bestowed a rare honour on him by giving him the cover in Feb, 2005. He is the recipient of the Rajiv Gandhi Award for Excellence in the field of Entertainment and has won scores of other awards in his career. In 2015, he received an honorary doctorate from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. The degree was awarded to him for his unparalleled philanthropy, altruism and his global reach as an actor. SRK married his long-time girlfriend Gauri in 1991 and their children are son Aryan (born in 1997), daughter Suhana (born in 2007) and AbRam (born in 2013). They live in their home called ‘Mannat’ – a heritage site, exempt from demolition, in Mumbai.
