Biography

The National award winning actor became a nationwide name with Satya, where he portrayed the role of Kallu Mama. Since then, he has given many memorable performances in films like Barfi!, Jolly LLB and PK. Originally belonging to Gorakhpur, Saurabh’s family moved to Delhi when he was just two years old. After his schooling, he graduated from Khalsa College and joined professional theatre. Some of his popular plays are - A View From The Bridge (Arthur Miller), Ghashiram Kotwal (Vijay Tendulkar) and Hayvandan. In 1991, he joined the NSD Repertoire Company as actor. In 1992, Saurabh got his first break in Bandit Queen, a film by Shekhar Kapur. His role as Gopi (assistant of the detective Vijay Anand) in the serial “Tehkikaat” aired on Doordarshan, brought him appreciation and success. Saurabh came to the limelight by co-writing the script for the film Satya (1998) which was directed by Ram Gopal Varma. He also gave critically acclaimed performance in the film as a gangster Kallu Mama. Saurabh was the winner of the Star Screen Award for Best Screenplay alongside Anurag Kashyap for Satya. Shukla then appeared in a string of popular films like Taal (1999), Arjun Pandit (1999), Hey Ram (2000), Yuva (2002), Lage Raho Munna Bhai (2006) and Dasvidaniya (2008). Saurabh scripted and acted in the film, Calcutta Mail (2003), which earned him the Zee Cine Award for the best screenplay. In recent times, he has appeared in films like Yeh Saali Zindagi (2011), Aarakshan (2011) and Barfi! (2012), which earned him an IIFA award nomination for the best actor in a supporting role. Two years later, he received the National Film Award for best actor in a supporting role for Jolly LLB. He has also appeared in supporting roles in Gunday (2014), Main Tera Hero (2014) and Kick (2014) and did a cameo in the Vinay Pathak starrer Gour Hari Dastaan (2015). Shukla also appeared in the international film, Slumdog Millionaire (2009) as Constable Srinivas. His upcoming films include Kaun Kitney Paani Mein (2015), Fraud Saiyyan (2015) and Mohalla Assi (2016).
