Born to screenwriter Salim Khan in Indore, Salman Khan is the eldest of three brothers and two sisters. He stepped into the world of cinema with a supporting role in the film, Biwi Ho To Aisi (1988). However, it was Sooraj Barjatya’s film Maine Pyar Kiya, released in the following year that made Salman a superstar almost overnight. The role earned him a FIlmfare award. He continued to deliver commercially successful films like Sanam Bewafa, Patthar ke Phool, Kurbaan and Saajan, all of which were some of the popular films of 1991. After the lull of 1992-1993, he made a comeback with Sooraj Barjatya's Hum Aapke Hain Kaun in 1994. The film remained the highest grosser for the next seven years. He received critical acclamation for his role in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Khamoshi: The Musical (1996). His subsequent films were Judwaa (‘97), Pyar Kiya Toh Darna Kya (‘98) and Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai (‘98). Salman won the Filmfare Award for the best supporting role in Karan Johar’s Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (‘98). The following year, he continued the streak of successful films with Hum Saath Saath Hain, Biwi No.1 and Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam. In more recent years, Salman has starred in many blockbusters like Tere Naam (2003), Wanted (2009), Dabangg (2010), Ready (2011), Bodyguard (2011), Ek Tha Tiger (2012), Dabangg 2 (2012) and Kick (2014). While Dabangg won the National Award for the Most Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment, he bagged the Stardust Star of the Year (male) award for his role as the tough cop, Chulbul Pandey, with a sense of humour. Salman made his debut on television, with the game show 10 Ka Dum, which became very popular and earned him the Best Anchor award. He also hosted five seasons of Bigg Boss and the Star Guild Award. Chillar Party (2011), saw Khan stepping into the producer’s shoes with his production company called Salman Khan Being Human Productions. He also founded the brand Being Human, the funds from which are meant for the underprivileged. Among brand endorsements, Salman has many big banners under his belt like Hero Honda, Thumps Up, History Channel, Sangini Jewellers, Tiger biscuits and many more. Salman is also known for being a very hard working body builder and has been voted as the 7th best looking man in the world by People’s Magazine. The star earned himself a wax statue in the coveted Madame Tussaud’s Museum with his ever-escalating popularity. His upcoming movies include Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) and Prem Ratan Dhan Payo (2015). He is also producing the remake of Hero (1983) and it stars Aditya Pancholi’s son Sooraj Pancholi and Suniel Shetty’s daughter Athiya Shetty. The superstar’s personal life has been marred with many controversies like the hit-and-run case and black buck hunting case among others. He has been linked to actresses Aishwarya Rai and Katrina Kaif in the past. However, his popularity remains unphased and he has found unfaltering support in his fans in the toughest of times. He is also known for being a mentor to many upcoming youngsters like Rinzing (son of Danny Denzongpa), Ali (raza Murad’s son) and has promoted music composers Himesh Reshammiya and Sajid-Wajid. Salman is still unmarried and stays in Mumbai.
