Biography

Fondly referred to as Benu Da, Sabyasachi is a popular face in Bengali films and television and has immortalized the character of Feluda, Satyajit Ray’s fictional detective. In Bollywood, he is known for his roles in Parineeta, Lahore and the latest film, Phantom. Born to Jagadish Chandra Chakraborty and Monica Chakraborty, Sabyasachi grew up in Bengal and completed his schooling from Andrews High School, Kolkata. He then pursued his B. Sc from Hansraj College, Delhi before clearing the AMI examination in 1978. He was nicknamed Benu by his parents and is often referred to by this name in the industry. Chakraborty is a popular face in the Bengali film industry, who stepped into the industry with a TV show, Tero Parbon in 1987. He stepped into films in 1992, with Tapan Sinha’s Antardhan. However, he came to the limelight by portraying the character of Feluda, Satyajit Ray’s famous detective. Till date, he is considered to be one of the most perfect fits for Ray’s sleuth. Over the years, he has bagged several awards owing to his work in the industry. In Bollywood, he has appeared in significant roles in films like Dil Se.. (1998), Khakee (2004) and Parineeta (2005). In recent times, he was seen in Lahore (2010) and From Sydney with Love (2012). Sabyasachi has also been a part of the international project The Namesake (2006), where he played the role of Ashima’s father. He is also a part of Kabir Khan’s latest flick, Phantom (2015), starring Saif Ali Khan and Katrina Kaif. Sabyasachi is an ardent nature lover and pursues wild life photography as a passion. He also writes columns on forests of India in magazines and newspapers. Chakraborthy is married to Mithu Chakraborthy, an actress and the couple has two sons - Arjun and Gaurav, who are also actors.
