Biography

The Indian film and TV actor attained true fame and popularity as a character on two of Balaji Telefilms’ most popular TV shows of all time, Kyunki Kabhi Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi and Kasauti Zindagi Kii. In Bollywood he proved his mettle as an actor with films like Udaan, Ugly and 2 States. Ronit Roy was born in Nagpur and spent his early years in Ahmedabad. He is the elder brother of TV actor and host, Rohit Roy. Their parents were Brothindranath and Dolly Bose Roy. After his schooling, Ronit Roy pursued a course in hotel management. When he shifted to Mumbai, he stayed with filmmaker Subhash Ghai and expressed his desire to join the industry. However, Ghai told him about the difficulties of the industry and Roy spent three years training at the Sea Rock Hotel in Mumbai. After his debut in Jaan Tere Naam (1992) had done well commercially, Ronit Roy appeared in a spate of supporting roles in films like 15th August (1993), Daanveer (1996) and Hulchul (1995). While his film career flagged, Ronit Roy got his break on TV in a cameo appearance on the show, Bombay Blue, in 1997. There were other short lived roles in Doordarshan entertainer, Baat Ban Jaye, and Suraag on Zee TV. Balaji Telefilms originally signed him on for their TV show Kammal, but soon realized his starring role would be as Rishabh Bajaj in Kasautii Zindagii Kay. His character's initial 8 week run was promptly extended. This role would win Ronit Roy his first Indian Telly Award for the Best Actor In A Supporting Role. Ronit Roy also took on the mantle of playing Mihir Virani, the male protagonist of Balaji Telefilms’ wildly popular family drama, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi. Alongside, he appeared in several high profile cameos on popular shows like Shhhhh..Koi Hai and Krisshna Arjun. His film career faced a resurgence with his part as a inconsiderate father in the generational drama, Udaan, in 2007. Ronit Roy won a whole host of awards for the role, including a Filmfare Award for the Best Villain. Ronit Roy was also seen in Mira Nair’s Midnight’s Children (2012). He bagged major supporting roles in Student Of The Year (2012), Shootout At Wadala (2013) and Akshay Kumar-starrer Boss (2013). His role in 2 States was also met with critical acclaim (2013). His portrayal of the tough cop on the look out for his step daughter in Ugly (2014) was critically acclaimed. His upcoming film is based on sports and set in Kolkata, titled Saat Kadam (2016). His TV career remained prolific during this deeper involvement in Bollywood. Ronit Roy picked up his second Indian Telly Award for Best Actor In A Lead Role for Kasam Se. He was also nominated for Indian Telly Awards for his role in Bandini and his current role as Advocate KD Pathak in Adaalat. Ronit Roy is also the owner of Ace Security & Protection agency, which is charged with providing security to Bollywood stars and productions. Ronit Roy married model Neelam Singh in 2003 and the couple have two children, daughter Aador, and son, Agasthya. He also has a daughter, Ona, from a previous marriage.
