Biography

Having bagged the National Award with his first film, Rishi Kapoor went on to become one of the most popular romantic heroes in his times. He won the hearts of audiences and critics alike with films like Chandni, Karz and the multi-starrer Amar Akbar Anthony. Rishi Kapoor, the second son of Bollywood legend and showman Raj Kapoor is the third generation film actor from the estemmed Kapoor family. He attended the Campion School, Mumbai like his brothers and graduated from Mayo College, Ajmer. He debuted in Bollywood with Mera Naam Joker (1970), where he portrayed the role of a young Raju. His acting earned him the National Film Award for best child artist. His first Filmfare Award for Best Actor came in the year 1973 for his debut film as a lead, Bobby, which was a runaway hit. He went on to star in films like Rafoo Chakkar (1975), Laila Majnu (1976), Kabhie Kabhie (1976) and the blockbuster Amar Akbar Anthony (1977). In the next few years, he did memorable roles in films like Sargam (1979), Karz (1980), Prem Rog (1982), Nagina (1986) and the superhit Chandni (1989). He also starred in Shekhar Gupta’s film, Damini (1993), alongside Sunny Deol and Meenakshi Sheshadri. In the last 15 years, he has appeared in many supporting roles, which have been appreciated by both critics and audiences. In 2010 he won Best Actor in supporting role for Love Aaj Kal from the Screen and Apsara Awards. The Critics Filmfare Award for Best Actor was awarded to Rishi Kapoor for his role in Do Dooni Chaar in 2011. He also did an iconic negative role in the 2012 remake of Agneepath by the same name, earning himself a Best Supporting Actor Filmfare Nomination. In 1998 he produced and directed a film by name ‘Aa Ab Laut Chalen’. In 2009, he acted in ‘Chintu Ji’ as himself. His role of the professor in Student Of The Year (2012), earned him much appreciation. Some of his recent ventures are D Day (2013), Shuddh Desi Romance (2013) and Bewakoofiyan (2014). His latest film, All is Well (2015), is about a dysfunctional family who go on a road trip and bond as the journey unfolds. Kapoor’s upcoming films include Wedding Pullav (2015), Sanam re (2016) and Kapoor and Sons (2016). He married co-star Neetu Singh in 1980. He had starred with her in over ten films. The couple has two children - actor Ranbir Kapoor and designer Riddhima Kapoor Sahani. Rishi Kapoor’s brothers, Randhir and Rajiv, are also actors and he is the uncle of actresses Karishma Kapoor and Kareena Kapoor Khan.
