Biography

The VJ-turned-actor started out in Bollywood with the film Ek Chhotisi Love Story. He then went on to deliver memorable and critically acclaimed performances in Pyaar Ke Side Effects, Bheja Fry and Traffic Signal. Ranvir Shorey was born in Jalandhar to Bollywood producer, KC Shorey. He did his schooling from Dayanand Model Sr. Secondary School, Jalandhar. Ranvir Shorey started out as a VJ on TV. He was then offered a role in Shashilal Nair’s controversial Ek Chhotisi Love Story in 2002. The furore around the movie’s explicit sexual nature, unfortunately, remained the most attention it received. However, it got Ranvir Shorey’s movie career in gear, with a minor role in Pooja Bhatt’s Jism (2003) next on the cards. He also featured in Waise Bhi Hota Hai Part 2 (2003) and Lakshya (2004). The breakthrough came in 2006. After a quiet start, Ranvir Shorey played Rahul Bose’s emotionally unhinged friend Nanoo in Pyaar Ke Side Effects (2006). This was then followed with a super turn as an unrefined also-ran in Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006). Both these parts earned Ranvir Shorey heaps of praise. The movies ran successful spells in the theatre and became a cult classic. The purple patch yielded another high profile part in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Traffic Signal in 2007. He then teamed up again with friend, Vinay Pathak, in Bheja Fry (2007), which became another independent hit. He moved onto more mainstream roles in Anurag Kashyap’s No Smoking (2007). He then landed a role in his first Yashraj feature film, Aaja Nachle (2007). Next up was Mithya in 2008, directed by Ranvir Shorey’s real life friend, Rajat Kapoor. The movie was an unbridled success, both commercially and critically. He then rounded off 2008 with roles in Sirf, Ugly Aur Pagli, Singh Is Kinng and a special appearance as himself in Fashion. Ranvir Shorey returned to his forte comedy as Chop Stick in Chandni Chowk To China in 2009. He was also in David Dhawan’s comic caper, Do Knot Disturb (2009), cast as a goofy detective. In 2012, Ranvir Shorey landed a supporting role in the Salman Khan-starrer, Ek Tha Tiger. The year got better when he also appeared in Mira Nair’s epic adaptation of Midnight’s Children. His film in 2013 Bajatey Raho failed to make an impact. His latest film is Titli (2015), a meditation on the Indian aspirational classes. Ranvir Shorey was also roped to host the 7th season of the dance-reality show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. Ranvir Shorey is also good friends with actors Vinay Pathak and Rajat Kapoor. The actor started dating actress Konkona Sen Sharma in 2007 and they tied the knot in 2010, which was followed by the birth of their son, Haroon. However, they parted ways in 2015.
