Biography

Hailing from a family that has given Bollywood some of its esteemed actors and directors, Ranbir has impressed audiences and critics alike within a short period of eight years. He has portrayed a wide array of roles in these few years and has carved a name for himself in the industry for being a versatile actor. Belonging to the fourth generation of the Kapoor family, Ranbir is son to actors Rishi and Neetu, great-grandson to Prithviraj and grandson to actor-director Raj Kapoor. His sister, Riddhima, is an interior and fashion designer. After completing his schooling from Bombay Scottish School, Mahim, Ranbir enrolled at the H. R. College of Commerce and Economics for his pre-university courses. Following the family legacy, he pursued filmmaking and method acting at the School of Visual Arts and the Strasberg Theatre and Film Institute respectively. He directed two short films, Passion to Love and India 1964 while studying in New York. He then assisted his father on his directorial venture Aa Ab Laut Chalen (1999) and proceeded to assist Sanjay Leela Bhansali in Black (2005). Ranbir debuted as an actor in Bhansali’s Saawariya (2007) which earned him the best debut award at Filmfare and IIFA, despite being a commercial failure. His next, YRF’s Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), where he plays a playboy who romances three women, was a superhit and set his career in motion. Since then he’s had a graph rapidly impeding upwards with films like Wake Up Sid (2009), Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani (2009) and Rocket Singh - Salesman of the Year (2009). While the comedy Ajab Prem Ki Ghazab Kahani was a hit, the other two performed moderately at the box office but were highly appreciated by the critics. He also bagged the Filmfare best actor award (critics choice) for all three. His next release, Rajneeti (2010), was a turning point in Kapoor’s career as he broke away from his image of the happy-go-lucky lover boy and portrayed the young politician who is forced to come to power after his father’s death. Ranbir also starred alongside Priyanka Chopra in Anjaana Anjaani (2010) but the film failed to impress the audiences. He then delivered back to back hits playing the musician in Rockstar (2011), the deaf and mute guy in Barfi! (2012) and the commitment phobic youngster in Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013). While Rockstar earned him the Filmfare Critics Choice awards, the other two won him the Filmfare best actor award, among other awards. His latest movies as the lead are Besharam (2013), Roy (2015) and Bombay Velvet (2015). Unfortunately neither of these films performed well and failed to impress the critics. He also appeared in cameos in Bhootnath Returns (2014) and PK (2014). He is also the content and programming adviser at the digital music company, Saavn. Ranbir established the production house Picture Shuru Productions along with director Anurag Basu and their first film will be Jagga Jasoos (2016), the story of an amateur sleuth and his assistant, starring Katrina Kaif and Ranbir. Ranbir will also be seen in Tamasha (2015) and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016). Being a sports enthusiast, he is the co-owner of the Indian Super League team, Mumbai City FC. Kapoor is also involved with multiple charitable institutions. He serves as the vice-captain of All Stars Football Club, which raises money for charity. He has been actively involved in campaigns that empower women and girls and is the goodwill ambassador of actress and social activist Shabana Azmi’s NGO Mijwan Welfare Society. In 2013, he received the “People of the Year Award” by the Limca Book of Records. Apart from acting, he has endorsed brands like Pepsi, Panasonic, Renault India and TATA DoCoMo. He was in a relationship with actress Deepika Padukone but the couple parted ways after a year.
