Biography

This young National Award winning actor came to the limelight with the experimental film Love Sex Aur Dhokha and impressed audiences and critics alike. Some of his most memorable performances were in the films Kai Po Che!, Shahid and Queen. Rajkummar Rao was born in Gurgaon into a middle class Ahir family. After finishing his schooling from Blue Bells Model School, he majored in Arts from Delhi University. Later he attended the Film and Television Institute Of India, Pune. He was also a stage actor during his college days with Kshitij Repository. As a FTII graduate, Rajkummar Rao spent some time on the sidelines. He was eventually handpicked by Dibakar Bannerjee to feature in his film, Love Sex Aur Dhokha (2010). The movie did well and Rajkummar Rao was lauded for his performance. Balaji Telefilms rewarded Rajkummar Rao for his stellar debut with a role in Ragini MMS (2011), which was a big hit. Shaitan in 2011 was his third release, and his first under Anurag Kashyap’s banner. Rajkummar Rao excelled as the slimy cop, Malwankar. The association with Anurag Kashyap continued with a truncated but effective role in Gangs Of Wasseypur Part 2 (2012) for him. In Chittagong (2012), Rajkummar Rao played the freedom fighter, Lokenath Bal and copped more acclaim. Talaash (2012) was the next big feature he was a part of, although again in a supporting role. Another milestone for Rajkummar Rao was signing on Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che! in 2013, based on the hit Chetan Bhagat novel. The movie was a blockbuster and Rajkummar Rao was nominated for a Filmfare Award. Later in 2013, Rajkummar appeared as the assassinated lawyer, Shahid Azmi, in a biopic in his most landmark role till date. The movie impressed the critics and Rao won the National Award for his performance. He was equally convincing as Kangana Ranaut’s runaway groom in Queen (2014). The movie was a blockbuster and his short but significant role was appreciated. In recent times, Rajkummar was in Hansal Mehta’s Citylights (2014), which garnered a lot of critical praise. He also starred alongside Vidya Balan and Emraan Hashmi in Hamari Adhuri Kahani (2015). His upcoming films include Shimla Mirchi (2016) and Newton (2016).
