Biography

The National Award winner actor, who immortalized the character of detective Byomkesh Bakshi on the small screen, is also a popular figure in Indian theatre and has appeared in many critically acclaimed films over the years. Rajit Kapur was born in Amritsar, Punjab and has spent most of his life in Mumbai. He started his career with Shyam Benegal’s Suraj Ka Satvan Ghoda (1992) and since then has acted in most of his films. The following year, Rajit became a household name, with everyone referring to him as his character on the television series Byomkesh Bakshi (1993 - 1997). The character became so famous that even today he is considered to be the best choice for portraying Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay's fictional sleuth. Rajit is also known for his award-winning performance in The Making of the Mahatma (1996), which earned him a National Award. He also acted in in the Malayalam film Agni Sakshi (1996), which earned him the Kerala State Film Award for best actor. Rajit always had an inclination towards theatre and in 1992, he, along with some friends, founded Rage Productions, exclusively dedicated to theatre. He appeared in plays like Love letters, Pune Highway, Mister Behram and Class of ‘84. Over the years, he was seen in various films - Ghulam (1998), Zubeidaa (2001), Nishad (2002), Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose: The Forgotten Hero (2005), Welcome to Sajjanpur (2008), Well Done Abba (2010) and Guzaarish (2010). In more recent times, he was seen in films like Singh Saab the Great (2013), Kick (2014), Phir Se... (2015) and Roy (2015). His latest film is Ananth Mahadevan’s Gour Hari Dastaan (2015), where he portrays the character of a lawyer.
