He is an alumnus of the National School of Drama where he trained in method acting that involved street theatre. Raj Babbar began his acting career in 1977 with a minor role in Kissa Kursi Ka. He rose to prominence when he played a negative role in the 1980 drama Insaaf Ka Tarazu. He then became a consistent feature of the B. R. He has also worked for television, and owns a film production company called Babbar Films Pvt. Ltd.. He was a supporter and member of the Samajwadi Party, but in 2008 joined Indian National Congress. He was married to actress Nadira Zaheer, with whom he had two kids - the actor Arya babbar and Juhi Babbar. He later married actress Smita Patil, and had a son with her - Prateik Raj Babbar, who is also an actor.
