Biography

After rising to fame as a VJ, the versatile actor stepped into films with Bus Yun Hi and delivered critically acclaimed performances in My Brother Nikhil and Rock On! Purab did his schooling from Pune, Maharashtra. He changed his field from Science to Commerce to Arts and studied Economics, Psychology and Literature. He wanted to be a pilot, but left the flying school to pursue a career in films. Kohli is the nephew of filmmaker Shekhar Kapur. His career started with acting on TV. He first appeared in Zee TV’s Hip Hip Hurray (1998) and gained acknowledgement by video jockeying for Channel V. He also hosted the travel show Gone India. He was chosen for anchoring Zee TV’s Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar (2010) and has been advertising for Colgate, Pizza Hut, Compaq Presario, Amaron Batteries and Castrol. He learnt salsa from renowned choreographer Shiamak Davar and contested in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa 7. Kohli’s debut film was Bas Yun Hi (2003), opposite Nandita Das. He has played roles in Supari (2003), Vastu Shastra (2004) and 13th Floor (2005). His acting in My Brother…Nikhil (2005) brought him under the limelight. This made him bag roles in Mahesh Bhatt’s Woh Lamhe (2006) and Awarapan (2007). He was also able to grab a role in Rock On!! (2008). Some of his other movies are Yeh Mera India (2009), Turning 30 (2011), I Am (2011), Fatso! (2012), Shaadi Ke Side Effects (2014) and Jal (2014). His role in Rock On!! (2008) helped him garner Special Jury Award at the 2009 Filmfare Awards. He was nominated for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role at Star Guild Awards. His upcoming projects are Sense8 (2015) and Rock On!! 2 (2016). He was married to Yamini Namjoshi, but the couple parted ways.
