Biography

Priyanka Chopra, also known as Pee Cee or Piggy Chops, is a role model to many with her amazing success story. The former Femina Miss India World, who has also won a National Award for her movie Fashion, has also turned heads with her singing and serves as the Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF Child Rights. Born in Jamshedpur, to Army physicians Ashok and Madhu Chopra, Priyanka spent her childhood in a lot of places because of the transferable jobs of her parents. She has a younger brother, Siddharth. She also spent a few years in the US as a teenager, with her aunt. While in the US, she learnt choral singing, Western Classical dance and Kathak apart from participating in plays. She returned to India and completed her high school from the Army Public School, Bareilly. In the year 2000, she participated in the Femina Miss India contest where she was crowned the Femina Miss India World. Soon after, she started receiving offers for films and made her debut with the Tamil film Thamizhan (2002). She stepped into Bollywood with Anil Sharma’s The Hero: Love Story of a Spy in 2003. The film was a commercial success but failed to impress the critics. She also starred in Andaaz (2003), alongside Akshay Kumar and Lara Dutta. Her performance earned her the Filmfare Award for the best debut - female. After a few failed films, she came back to the limelight with the film Mujhse Shaadi Karogi (2004). In 2006, she won the Filmfare award for the best performance in a negative role for Aitraaz. She followed it up with films like Don (2006), Fashion (2008), Kaminey (2009), and 7 Khoon Maaf (2011). Her role in Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion won her the National Film Award for Best Actress. Subsequently, she acted in Dostana (2008), Anjaana Anjaani (2010), Agneepath (2012), Barfi! (2012), Krrish 3 (2013), and Gunday (2014). Her portrayal of the autistic girl in Barfi! earned her great reviews and she was established as one of the most versatile actors. In 2014, she was highly praised for her performance in the biopic Mary Kom. Her latest film, Dil Dhadakne Do (2015), was a commercial success and she appeared alongside Ranveer Singh, Anil Kapoor, Anushka Sharma and Farhan Akhtar in the movie. Apart from films, Priyanka is also a keen singer and has received international recognition for her singles like In My City and Exotica. She was signed by the Creative Artists Agency, in 2012, thus becoming the first from the industry to sign a contract with the coveted agency. Chopra is also a philanthropist and actively participates in events that spread awareness about the girl child, environmental issues and other important subjects. In 2010, she was appointed the Goodwill Ambassador for child rights of UNICEF. She is also an ambassador for the NDTV Greenathon that promotes eco-friendliness. Priyanka has participated in fashion shows and other events to raise money for earthquake victims and cancer patients. Apart from acting in films, Priyanka has also endorsed brands like Lux, Pepsi, Nokia, Nestle, Hero Honda and Garnier. In 2015, she was termed as the most influential Indian woman on twitter by The Huffington Post. She also appeared on the small screen recently with the American series Quantico (2015). Priyanka will be seen next in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Bajirao Mastani (2015), alongside Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone. She will also be a part of the movie Gangajal 2, the release date of which is yet to be announced.
