His best work includes a role in Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s Bagh Bahadur in 1989, which won a National Award and his portrayal of Tiger Memon in Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday. He also won an individual National Award for his work in the movie Fakir.

Biography

Pawan Malhotra is an Indian TV and film actor. He made his debut in Pankaj Parashar’s Ab Aayega Mazaa in 1984. His best work includes a role in Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s Bagh Bahadur in 1989, which won a National Award and his portrayal of Tiger Memon in Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday. He also won an individual National Award for his work in the movie Fakir. Career After a stint in theatre while in Delhi, Pawan Malhotra moved to Mumbai to become an assistant on the TV show, Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi in 1984. He also made his film debut the same year. But he gained serious recognition as an actor only after being included in the cast for Saeed Mirza’s TV series, Nukkad, in 1986. In 1989, he played Ghunuram in Buddhadeb Dasgupta’s National Award-winning Bengali drama, Bagh Bahadur. He would also go on to win a BAFTA Award for the part. The purple patch extended to Pawan Malhotra landing the lead role in Saeed Mirza’s Salim Langde Pe Mat Ro the same year. Pawan Malhotra then worked with Shyam Benegal on latter’s film on the Swadhyay movement, Antarnaad in 1992. His first international project, Roland Joffe’s City Of Joy, followed. The movie, based on Dominique Lapierre’s book of the same name, also co-starred Om Puri and Patrick Swayze. Pawan Malhotra returned to TV briefly to appear in a show called Zameen Aasman in 1995. But he wouldn't be gone too long, featuring in supporting roles in Subhash Ghai’s Pardes and Deepa Mehta’s Earth. After winning a National Award for his role in Fakir in 1998, the next big milestone for Pawan Malhotra was his Telugu debut, Aithe. His role as the ruthless don Irfan Khan in the movie is still remembered fondly by the critics and won him a Filmfare Award. In 2004, Pawan Malhotra played Tiger Memon in Black Friday, another role lauded by the critics. Thereafter, Pawan Malhotra became a staple character actor. He played impactful supporting roles in Don - The Chase Begins and Jab We Met. Some of the movies he appeared in were not as successful, like Sangam and Parmeet Sethi’s first, Badmaash Company. Lately, Pawan Malhotra has returned to arthouse cinema with 1984 Punjab and Children Of War. He also appeared on the TV show Lagi Tujhse Lagan on Colors TV. Personal Life Pavan Malhotra was born in Panipat in the state of Haryana in July 1958. He attended Delhi University, where he got a Bachelor’s Degree in Arts. It was here where he first experienced theatre.
