Om Puri is a National Award winning Indian actor who has appeared in over 100 feature films including British and American films. He is best known for films like Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro, Mirch Masala and Dharavi. In more recent times, he has acted in Dabangg, Oh My God, Dirty Politics and Miss Tanakpur Haazir Ho. Born into a middle class Punjabi family, he was the youngest of seven children. Like his father,Om was keen on joining the Indian Army, but later dropped the idea after venturing into stage acting during college. After completing his graduation at Khalsa college, Patiala, Om studied at the prestigious National School of Drama for three years graduating from the class of 1973 along with fellow actor Naseeruddin Shah. After acting on stage for several years, he enrolled in the Film & Television Institute,Pune for a two-year acting course. He made his film debut in the 1976 Marathi film Ghashiram Kotwal, based on a Marathi play by the same name. The film was directed by K. Hariharan and Mani Kaul in cooperation with 16 graduates of the FTII and was based on the play of the same name by Vijay Tendulkar . Puri entered into the Indian cinema during the early Seventies , an era regarded as the beginning of the Art film revolution with likes of groundbreaking films such as Aakrosh (1980), Ardh Satya (1980) and Arohan (1982). He won the National Award for two consecutive years in 1982 and 1983 for Arohan and Ardh Satya and along with Amrish Puri, Naseeruddin Shah, Shabana Azmi and Smita Patil, was the face of what was then referred to as parallel cinema such as as Bhavni Bhavai (1980), Sadgati (1981), Ardh Satya (1982), Mirch Masala( 1986) and Dharavi (1992). Apart from Bollywood, Puri has acted in several remarkable Kannada, Malayalam and Telugu films as well. He was awarded the Padma Shri in 1990. In 1999, Puri acted in a Kannada movie A.K. 47 as a strict police officer fighting against the underworld which went on to become a huge commercial hit. He has rendered his own voice for other Kannada movies. Om also featured in commercial hit films such as Mrityudand (1997), Ghayal (1990), for which he won a Filmfare award for Best supporting actor award. Puri also left his indelible mark on the smaller screen during the late 80’s .He received critical acclaim for his performance in Govind Nihalani's television film Tamas (1987) based on a Hindi novel of the same name. Hindi television serials like Kakaji Kahin (1988, a political satire) that saw him as a paan-chewing 'Kakka Ji', and Mr. Yogi (1989) showcased Om Puri's versatility as a comedian , a testimony that also reflects in some of his films, such the cult-film “Jaane Bhi Do Yaaron’ in 1983, Chachi 420 (1997) and more recently in Malamaal Weekly (2006), Chup Chup Ke (2006), Hera Pheri (2000) amongst others. After many years, Puri is to be seen again on small screen in crime show Savdhaan India’s second season .During the 1990’s , Puri stretched his acting prowess beyond territory by starring in many British films such as My Son the Fanatic (1997), East Is East(1999), which garnered him a BAFTA nomination, and The Parole Officer (2001). He appeared in Hollywood films including City of Joy (1992), opposite Patrick Swayze; Wolf (1994) alongside Jack Nicholson; and The Ghost and the Darkness (1996) opposite Val Kilmer. His most recent outing was opposite Helen Mirren in the comedy-drama The Hundred-Foot Journey (2014). His upcoming films include Welcome Back (2015) and Ghayal Once Again (2015). One of the most recognised faces of the richest pool of talented actors in India, Puri also claims pride and efficiency in two other distinct abilities, farming and opening a north Indian Dhaba, preferably called ‘Dal Roti’, a dream he nurtures. He has been married to Seema Kapoor and is presently married to Nandita Puri. The couple also has a son called Ishaan and they stay in Mumbai.
