Biography

Nawazuddin Siddiqui is an Indian actor who did many small roles before rising to fame with Kahaani. Many of his films like The Lunchbox, Monsoon Shootout and Patang have been screened at international film festivals. The actor also has a National Award to his credit and has been seen in films like Lateef and Badlapur in more recent times. Born to a farmer, in the small village of Budhana in the district of Muzaffarnagar, Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s journey to Bollywood has been nothing short of incredible. Growing up with eight siblings, Nawaz graduated in science from Gurukul Kangri University in Haridwar. He worked in a petrochemical firm as a chemist for a while before shifting to Delhi, where he joined the National School of Drama. After graduating in 1996, he started acting in theatre in Delhi and worked as a watchman to make ends meet. Soon after, he shifted to Mumbai in search of more lucrative offers. He landed a few blink and you miss roles in Sarfarosh (1999), Shool (1999) and Munnabhai M.B.B.S (2003). In 2003, he also did a silent short film with Irrfan Khan called The Bypass which won the BAFTA award. He appeared in Anurag Kashyap’s Black Friday (2004), which brought him recognition and more offers. However, it took him another eight years to truly come to the spotlight. His next film Patang (2008), which was released worldwide much later, was screened at the Berlin and Tribeca Film Festival and his performance was critically acclaimed. In 2010, he was part of the critically acclaimed film Peepli Live and he received positive criticism for his role of a journalist. In the meanwhile, his next film Dekh Indian Circus (2011) won him a National Award – Special Jury Award. He was also given the best actor award at the New York Indian Film Festival for the same. However, his true breakthrough came with Sujoy Ghosh’s Kahaani (2012), where he played an intelligent and strict cop. In the same year, he went on to deliver more commercially and critically successful films like Gangs of Wasseypur – Part 1 & 2, Talaash, Chittagong, Paan Singh Tomar and Miss Lovely, which was also screened at the Cannes Film Festival. The following year, two of his works – The Lunchbox and Monsoon Shootout – were screened at the Cannes Films Festival. The Lunchbox also earned him the Filmfare Award for the Best Supporting Actor. His subsequent films included Kick (2014), Lateef (2015) and Badlapur (2015). His upcoming films include Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015), Manjhi- The Mountain Man (2015), Farzi (2016), Monsoon Shootout (2016), Haraamkhor (2016), Ghoomketu (2016) and Raees (2016). Nawazuddin is married to Anjali Siddiqui and the couple has a daughter called Shora and a son called Yaani. He resides in Mumbai with his family.
