Biography

The Padma Shri awardee and National Award winner actor is considered to be one of the finest actors in the industry. Patekar has proved his mettle as an actor by portraying an array of roles in different genres like comedy, drama and thriller. Nana Patekar was born as Vishwanath “Nana” Patekar in Murud-Janjira in the district of Raigad. He studied at the Sir J.J. Institute of Applied Arts in Mumbai. Patekar made his debut in Hindi cinema with the movie Gaman (1978). He was then seen in movies such as Aaj Ki Awaz (1987), Mohre (1987) and Salaam Bombay! (1988). However, his performance as an actor came to be recognized only after the release of the crime drama flick Parinda (1989), for which he was awarded with his first National Award for Best Supporting Actor along with the Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award. Patekar made his directorial debut with the drama film Prahaar: The Final Attack (1991), starring himself, Madhuri Dixit, Dimple Kapadia, Gautam Joglekar and others. During the same period, he acted in award winning films such as Angaar (1992), for which he bagged the Filmfare Best Villain Award, Krantiveer (1994), which got him the National Film Award for Best Actor and the children’s film Abhay (The Fearless) (1995), which won two awards at the 42nd National Film Festival held in the year 1994. During 1990s, he was also a part of the TV series Jungle Book, aired on Doordarshan, where he was the voice of the evil Sher Khan. Since then, Patekar has acted in movies such as Agni Sakshi (1996), Khamoshi: The Musical (1996), Wajood (1998), Kohram (1999), Hu Tu Tu (1999), Ab Tak Chhappan (2004), Bluffmaster! (2005) and Welcome (2007). During the same time, he acted in the crime drama film Apaharan (2005), for which he won the Filmfare Best Villain Award and Star Screen Award Best Villain. Patekar has been a part of critically and commercially successful Marathi movies such as Deool (2011) and Dr. Prakash Baba Amte – The Real Hero (2014). His Bollywood movie was Ab Tak Chhappan 2 (2015) was a hit and was critically acclaimed. His role of the don with a sense of humour in Welcome (2007) was highly appreciated and he is also a part of the sequel to the blockbuster, titled Welcome Back, which will be releasing in September, 2015. Patekar was awarded with the Padma Shri for his dedication in the Field of Films and Arts in 2013.
