With a career spanning over 35 years, Mohanlal is a veteran Indian actor and producer mainly associated with South Indian films and has acted in over 300 films. Born as Mohanlal Viswanathan Nair, popularly known as Mohanlal, in Kerala, he did his graduation in Commerce from Mahatma Gandhi College in Thiruvananthapuram. Mohanlal made his acting debut in the Malyalam language feature film Thiranottam (1978) which was released 25 years later, followed by appearing in the super hit movie Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980), where he played the lead antagonist. He stepped into the comedy genre with Poochakkoru Mookkuthi (1984) followed by Uyarangalil (1984), Nokkethadhoorathu Kannum Nattu (1984), Boeing Boeing (1985) and Aram + Aram Kinnaram (1985). Mohanlal acted in the comedy drama film T. P. Balagopalan M.A. (1996), for which he bagged his first Kerala State Film Award for Best Actor. His performance in the feature film Sanmanassullavarkku Samadhanam (1986), got him the Filmfare Award for Best Actor (Malyalam). He was soon declared a superstar in Malyalam film industry after the massive success of his crime drama flick Rajavinte Makan (1986). Continuing the success graph, Mohanlal was seen in Mani Ratnam’s Tamil movie Iruvar (1997), which was a major critical success and the movie won the Best Film Award at the Belgrade International Film Festival alongwith two National Film Awards. He was a part of the Indo-French period drama Vanaprastham (1999), for which he won his second National Award for Best Actor. This movie was nominated in the competitive section at the Cannes Film Festival. Two years later, he made his debut in Hindi cinema with Ram Gopal Varma’s crime thriller Company (2002), for which he won the Star Screen Award in the Best Supporting Actor category. Mohanlal went on to star in the black comedy Udayananu Tharam (2005), which was well received by both the critics and the movie buffs. The Indian Government conferred him with the honorary title of Lieutenant colonel from Indian Territorial Army in the year 2009. Mohanlal was seen in five movies in the year 2010 followed by six movies in the year 2012. He was seen in the Tamil movie Jilla (2014) alongwith Vijay, which did very well commercially. In the same year, he appeared in the Malyalam movie Mr. Fraud (2014) followed by the political sattire Peruchazhi (2014). His recent projects includethe film, Mythri (2015) and Loham (2015). Mohanlal alongwith Ratheesh Vegha has formed the music band “Lalisom – The Lal Effect”. He has been an equally active theatre actor as well. Mohanlal is married to Suchithra Balaji and the couple have two children together.
