Biography

With a career spanning around four decades, Mithun Chakraborty is a veteran Indian actor, producer and writer and considered to one of the finest actors in Hindi cinema and has acted in over 350 films including Bengali, Oriya, Bhojpuri, Telugu, Hindi and Punjabi films. Born as Gouranga Chakraborty, populary known as Mithun Da, he graduated from the Film and Television Institute of India in Pune. Before pursuing a career in acting, he worked as a dancer. Mithun made his acting debut with Mrinal Sen’s art film Mrigaya (1976) for which, he was awarded the National Film Award for Best Actor followed by success of another film, Mera Rakshak (1978). However, he came into limelight only after Ravikant Nagaich’s spy film Surakshaa (1979), hit theatres. During, the same time, he was seen in two other movies namely, Tarana (1979) and Prem Vivah (1979). Mithun was seen in 110 movies in the 1980s. His super hit movie Disco Dancer (1982) released during this time. This was followed by movies such as Shaukeen (1982), Sun Sajna (1982) and Aamne Samne (1982). He was seen in a couple of romantic and family drama movies, which include, Mujhe Insaaf Chahiye (1983), Ghar Ek Mandir (1984), Pyaar Jhukta Nahin (1985), Swarg Se Sunder (1986) and Pyaar Ka Mandir (1988). He was then seen as an action hero in movies like Jagir (1984), Jaal (1986), Dilwaala (1986), Watan Ke Rakhwale (1987) and Waqt Ki Awaz (1988). Chakraborty once again appeared in over 100 movies in 1990s. His first film during this period was Agneepath (1990), for which he won the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor. In 1992, he won his second National Film Award for Best Actor for the Bengali film Tahader Katha (1992). He was seen in a villainous character in the movie Jallaad (1995), which fetched him a Filmfare and Star Screen Award in the Best Villain category. In the year 1998, he won his third National award for Best Supporting Actor for the film Swami (1998). In 2000s, he was seen prominently in Bengali movies. He also appeared in movies like Titli (2002), Barood (2004), Yuddlo (2005), Guru (2007), Tulkalam (2007) and Rehman Ali (2010). He made his Hindi cinema comeback with the movie Elaan (2005). He was then seen in supporting roles in films like Lucky: No Time for Love (2000) and Dil Diya Hai (2006). He received critical acclaim for his role in Kalpana Lajmi’s movie Chingaari (2005). His movie Zor Lagaa Ke…Haiya! (2009) won multiple international awards. Recently, Chakraborty was seen in movies like Golmaal 3 (2010), Housefull 2 (2012), OMG – Oh My God (2012), Khiladi 786 (2012), Boss (2013), Kaanchi… (2014), Kick (2014), Entertainment (2014) and Hawaizaada (2015). He is a popular celebrity judge, lovingly referred to as “Grandmaster”, on the dance reality show Dance India Dance, which airs on Zee TV. His latest projects include roles in Nakshal (2015) and Bhaiyajji Superhit (2016) among others. Mithun Da is a Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament. He is married to former actress Yogita Bali and has two sons and two daughter, Mahaakshay Chakraborty, Rimoh Chakraborty, Namashi Chakraborty and Dishani Chakraborty respectively.
