Maneesh Sharma is an Indian film director and scriptwriter. He made his directorial debut with Yashraj’s Band Baaja Baarat in 2010, which opened to rave reviews. It won him the Filmfare Award for Best Debutant Director. He has since directed two other Yashraj films. Career His forays into theatre as a student aside, Maneesh Sharma’s first professional experience was as associate director on Trona, a student film shot in 2004. Maneesh Sharma was soon brought into the Yashraj Films’ fold soon after an assistant director. He was employed on movies such as Kunal Kohli’s Fanaa and Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, directed by Aditya Chopra himself. This set him up to make his directorial debut with Band Bajaa Baarat in 2010, a story he wrote himself. It was bankrolled by Aditya Chopra and starred debutants Ranveer Singh and Anushka Sharma. The movie did well and earned Maneesh Sharma a Best Debutant Award at the Filmfare Awards. He was next at the helm for Ladies Vs Ricky Bahl, loosely based on the Hollywood story John Tucker Must Die. Its box office gross was average amidst mixed critical response. Maneesh Sharma’s next directorial venture, Shuddh Desi Romance, did much better. A certified hit, it explored contemporary views on love and relationships which struck a popular chord. His next Fan with Shahrukh Khan is scheduled to release this Christmas. Personal Life Maneesh Sharma was born and raised in Delhi. He attended Hans Raj College, where he majored in English. In college he was involved in theatre, also shooting his first film while there. He moved onto CalArts in California to study filmmaking after graduation.
