Biography

Considered to be one of the most beautiful and natural actresses in Hindi cinema, Karisma Kapoor is a National Award winning film actress who has acted in numerous blockbusters which include Raja Hindustani, Dil To Pagal Hai and many more. Born in Mumbai into the prolific Kapoor clan, she is the daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita. Successful actress Kareena Kapoor Khan is her sister and actor Saif Ali Khan is her brother-in-law. After completing her studies from Cathedral and John Connon School and Sophia College, she went on to make her Bollywood debut with the film, Prem Qaidi (1991) which was a semi-hit followed by Jigar (1992) which a hit. She went on to appear in a string of commercially unsuccessful films till Anari (1993) and Muqabla (1993) which were successful. She did not receive major success except for moderate success in some films like Raja Babu (1994), Khuddar (1994), Andaz (1994) and Suhaag (1994). She received breakthrough success with the film Coolie No 1 (1995) which was a major hit and received cult status over the years also marking her successful collaboration with director David Dhawan and actor Govinda in many more films. After receiving mixed success for two years, she became a star and received major accolades for her highest grossing film ever, Raja Hindustani (1996) winning her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. After continued success in Judwaa (1997) and Hero No 1 (1997) she starred in Dil To Pagal Hai (1997) which was not only a blockbuster but in spite of the presence of Shah Rukh Khan and Madhuri Dixit, her performance was widely appreciated winning her the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award and the National Award for Best Supporting Actress. She went on to receive further success in films like Biwi No 1 (1999), Haseena Maan Jayegi (1999), Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999), Jaanwar (1999), Dulhan Hum Le Jayenge (2000) and critical acclaim for Fiza (2000) for which she also won the Filmfare Best Actress Award and Zubeidaa (2001) for which she won the Filmfare Critics Award for Best Actress. Her later releases Rishtey (2002) and Baaz: A Bird In Danger (2003) and the delayed film, Mere Jeevan Saathi (2006) all bombed at the box office and she took a sabbatical from acting before making a comeback with Dangerous Ishhq (2012) which was a flop at the box office. Karishma has been fairly active on TV appearing on the show, Karishma-The Miracles of Destiny (2003-04) and judging the TV show Hans Baliye (2009). Karishma has been a noted philanthropist and supports many charities along with being the brand ambassador for Pinkathon (2012) for breast cancer awareness. She has also done various TV commercials for brands like Kellogg’s, Danone, Admix Retail, Garnier Color and more. Karishma was engaged to actor Abhishek Bachchan but they called it off after a few months. She married industrialist, Sanjay Kapur (2003-14) before separating from him and their divorce petition is still in court. Together the couple has a son and a daughter.
