Biography

Hailing from the reputed Kapoor family, Kareena made her mark in the industry with her debut film Refugee. Today, she is one of the most successful actresses in the industry and is best known for Jab We Met, Omkara, 3 Idiots and other popular and critically acclaimed films. Born into the reputed Kapoor family of the Indian film industry, Kareena is the younger daughter of Randhir Kapoor and Babita and sister of Bollywood actress Karishma Kapoor. She completed her schooling from Jamnabai Narsee School, Mumbai and Welham Girl’s School, Dehradun. She pursued commerce for two years from Mithibai College, Mumbai and later she spent a year studying Law at the Government Law College, Mumbai. She went on to join an acting institute in Mumbai where she was guided by FTII graduate Kishore Namit Kapoor. She stepped into the film industry with J.P. Dutta’s Refugee (2000), alongside Abhishek Bachchan, where her performance was praised by critics. Even though the film didn’t do as well, it earned her the Filmfare Award for the Best Female Debut. Her subsequent films like Mujhe Kucch Kehna Hai (2001), Yaadein (2001), Ajnabee (2001) and Asoka (2001) didn’t do as well but they established her mettle as an actress. Her next breakthrough came with Karan Johar’s Kabhi Khushi Kabhi Ghum later that year. In 2004, she broke away from her usual roles and played a prostitute in the critically acclaimed Chameli (2004). The role won her the Filmfare special award and the critics’ award in the Bollywood Movie Awards. She followed it up with more critically acclaimed films like Yuva (2004) and Dev (2004), which won her another critics’ award for the best actress by Filmfare. Next, she did not so successful movies like Fida (2004) and Bewafa (2005). Her subsequent films like the comedy Hulchul (2004) and the thriller Aitraaz (2004) proved to be successful at the box office. A major turning point in her career was Vishal Bhardwaj’s, Omkara (2006), which was an adaptation of Shakespeare’s Othello. She followed it up with yet another successful performance in Imtiaz Ali’s Jab We met (2007), where she played a vivacious girl who falls in love with a co-passenger and turns his life around with her optimism. After the misses Tashan (2008) and Kambakkht Ishq (2009), she starred in a string of successful films like 3 Idiots (2009), Bodyguard (2011), Ra One (2011) and Talaash (2012). Her last major work was in Singham Returns (2014). She will be seen next in Bajrangi Bhaijaan (2015) followed by Udta Punjab in early 2016. The actress recently completed 15 years in the film industry. She is married to actor Saif Ali Khan and resides in Mumbai.
