Biography

Actress Kangana Ranaut made a breakthrough debut in Gangster and has continued to impress with films like Woh Lamhe, Fashion, Life...in a Metro and Tanu weds Manu. The National Award winner has also co-scripted the phenomenal hit Queen of which she was the protagonist. Young and versatile, she has soared in to the leading ladies club with her award-winning performances.

Hailing from Himachal Pradesh, Kangana Ranaut’s success story is much like a modern day fairy tale. Born into a joint family to Amardeep Ranaut, a businessman and Asha Ranaut, a school teacher, Kangana wanted to be a doctor. However, she shifted to Delhi at the tender age of 16, hoping to step into the world of acting. After a few modelling assignments, she quit; and her passion and hard work landed her in numerous plays where she was highly appreciated. Life took her next to Mumbai where she enrolled in acting classes.

Her first film, Anurag Basu’s Gangster (2006), was filmed when she was only 17. Grasping the complexity of her character and portraying the alcoholic Simran caught in between two men, earned her much deserved critical acclaim. She also won the best Female Debut at the Filmfare awards for the same. She followed it up with another critically acclaimed film – Woh Lamhe (2006), which was based on the life of Parveen Babi who suffered from schizophrenia. A few misses like Shakalaka Boom Boom (2007) only brought her back stronger as the modern day independent Neha in Life...in a Metro (2007). She broke the stereotypes when she was cast as the bubbly girl in the romantic comedy Tanu weds Manu (2011). Another milestone in her career was Madhur Bhandarkar’s Fashion (2008) where she played a supermodel struggling with her fame and addiction. She went on to win the National Film Award and Filmfare Award for the best supporting actress for the same.

In more recent times, Kangana soared into the leading ladies’ club with her award-winning performance in Queen (2014) that she also co-scripted. Her performance earned her yet another National Award and Filmfare Award for the best actress. Her latest film Tanu weds Manu Returns (2015) has also been well-received by critics and audiences alike. Her upcoming films include Katti Batti (September 2015) where she shares screen space with Imran Khan for the first time and I Love New Year (July 2015) where she is paired with Sunny Deol.

Kangana is presently single and resides in Mumbai with her sister Rangoli.
