Biography

The veteran comic actor who shot to fame with Tezaab is a household name across the nation for his comic timing and acting and has given memorable performances in films like Deewana Mastana, Raja Hindustani, Housefull 2 and Boss. Johnny Lever was born in Andhra Pradesh to Prakash Rao Janumala and his wife, Karunamma Janumala as John Rao. His father was an operator with Hindustan Lever Ltd (HLL) plant. He grew up in King’s Circle, Mumbai and attended Andhra Education Society English High School till class seven. Due to financial difficulties, he has to abandon school and he started doing odd jobs to make ends meet. Johnny Lever also joined HLL and often performed at functions. During one of these functions, he earned the stage name of Johnny Lever and decided to keep it when he joined the industry. He spent a considerable amount of time in Yakutpura, Hyderabad, where he picked up his style of comedy. Johnny Lever also performed stand up comedy with orchestras like the Tabassum Hit Parade and then joined the hit duo of composers Kalyanji-Anandji. After working in many films in minor roles, Lever landed his breakthrough role in Tezaab (1988) followed by Kishen Kanhaiya (1990). In 1993 came Baazigar, after which Lever was cast in almost every single film in a supporting comic role. Some of his most popular films during this decade are Criminal (1995), Raja Hindustani (1996), Judaai (1997), Ishq (1997), Dulhe Raja (1998), Deewana Mastana (1998), and Baadshah (1999). Raja Hindustani earned him the Star Screen Award for best comedian and he won the Filmfare Award for Deewana Mastana and Dulhe Raja. He has portrayed some of the most memorable and comic roles in Indian cinema in films like Love Ke Liye Kuch Bhi Karega (2001) and Awara Paagal Deewana (2002). In recent times, he was seen in films like Housefull 2 (2012), Boss (2013) and Entertainment (2014). His upcoming film is Rohit Shetty’s Dilwale (2015). Lever has also worked as a television actor and singer. He appeared on Zee TV’s Johnny Aala Re and was also a judge on the show Comedy Circus. Lever is the president of Cine and T.V Artist Association and also of Mimicry Artist Association Mumbai. He is married to Sujatha and has two children, Jamie, a stand up comedian and Jesse. His brother Jimmy is a famous stand-up comedian.
