Biography

Jimmy Shergill is an Indian film actor and producer associated with Bollywood and Punjabi films and is best known for his roles in Mohabbatein, Haasil and A Wednesday among others. Born in a Sikh family as Jasjit Singh Gill in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh, Jimmy studied in St. Francis College, Lucknow before moving to Punjab and completing his education from The Punjab Public School, Nabha and Bikram College, Patiala. After learning acting from Sri Harpal Singh, he moved to Mumbai to pursue a further career in acting. He debuted with the film, Maachis (1996) which was a critical and commercial success also getting him recognition which led him to star in the ensemble cast blockbuster film, Mohabbatein (2000) which was the breakthrough of his career. After appearing in flops like Kehtaa Hai Dil Baar Baar (2002) and Dil Hai Tumhaara (2002), he appeared in the cult film, Haasil (2003) which received major critical acclaim followed by a pivotal role in the blockbuster film, Munnabhai M.B.B.S. (2003). He went on to work in several films but received critical acclaim and praise for his roles in films like Hum Tum (2004), Yahaan (2005), Lage Raho Munnabhai (2006), Bas Ek Pal (2006) and Eklavya: The Royal Guard (2007) followed by commercial success with A Wednesday (2008), My Name Is Khan (2010), Tanu Weds Manu (2011), Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster (2011), Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Returns (2013) for which he won the Best Actor Award at the 11th Norway Bollywood Film Festival in Oslo, Special Chabbis (2013), Bang Bang! (2014) and Tanu Weds Manu Returns (2015). He made his Punjabi film debut with Yaaran Naal Baharan (2005) which was a box office success and went on to work in several films like Mannat (2006), Munde U.K. De (2009), Mel Karade Rabba (2010), Dharti (2011), Saadi Love Story (2013) and Rangeelay (2013) where the latter three which was also produced by him, Aa Gaye Munde U.K. De (2014) and Shareek (2015). His latest projects include a role in Uuva (2015). Jimmy is married to Priyanka Puri and together they have a son, Veer Shergill.
