Biography

Hansal Mehta is an Indian film director, writer and actor who is best known for his National Award winning film, Shahid. Before venturing into films, Hansal Mehta directed the hit cookery show, Khaana Khazana (1993-2000) hosted by Sanjeev Kapoor. He went on to make his directorial debut with the film …Jayate (1999) followed by Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar!! (2002) which received a cult status over the years. His next film, Chhal (2002) received acclaim. After a series of unsuccessful films, he directed a short film in the anthology film, Dus Kahaniyaan (2007) followed by Woodstock Villa (2008). He took a short sabbatical and returned to direction with Shahid (2013), starring Rajkumar Rao which received widespread critical acclaim and got him recognition and also won him the National Award for Best Direction. He re-united with Rao to make his next, City Lights (2014) which was also critically acclaimed and turned out to be a huge box office hit considering its budget. His future projects include directing the film, Aligarh (2015) starring Manoj Bajpai and Rajkumar Rao. Hansal Mehta is married and reside in Mumbai with their daughter, Kimaya Mehta.
