Biography

After achieving commercial success with films like Murder, Zeher and Raaz, the versatile actor received critical acclaim with films like Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai, The Dirty Picture and Shanghai. He is also popular for being associated with films that deliver chartbusters. Emraan Hashmi was born into a Muslim family in Mumbai, Maharashtra. His father is Anwar Hashmi and his mother’s name is Mahira Hashmi. Emraan is nephew to director and producer, Mahesh Bhatt and Mukesh Bhatt; while director Mohit Suri, actress and director Pooja Bhatt, actor Rahul Bhatt, and actress Alia Bhatt are his cousins. His father, Anwar, was also an actor and was the son of actress Purnima Das Verma, the sister of Shirin Mohammad Ali. Emraan completed his education from Sydenham College, Mumbai and the University of Mumbai. He started his career in the industry by working with Vishesh Films as an assistant director on Vikram Bhatt's super hit flick Raaz (2002). However, it was in 2003, that he debuted as an actor with Bhatt's Footpath and later starred in Murder (2004), which opened to mixed reviews. He followed it up with films like Zeher (2005), Aashiq Banaya Aapne (2005), Awarapan (2007), Jannat (2008) and Raaz - The Mystery Continues (2008). Most of these films received mixed to positive responses, except Raaz, which was a hit. However, he became very popular because most of his films’ albums became bestsellers. Hashmi finally received critical applause for Once Upon a Time in Mumbaai (2010), The Dirty Picture (2011), Shanghai (2012) and Ek Thi Daayan (2013). In recent times, he was seen in Raja Natwarlal (2014), Ungli (2014), Mr. X (2015) and Hamari Adhuri Kahaani (2015). His upcoming films include Azhar (2016) and Raaz Reboot (2016). Over the years, he has been nicknamed in the industry as “serial kisser” as he has a record of kissing most of his leading co-stars on screen. Among endorsements, Emraan Hashmi has appeared in commercials for Cobra deodorant and Meglow fairness cream for men. Emraan tied the knot with his girlfriend Parveen Shahani in 2006 and Ayaan Hashmi, their son, was born in 2010. In 2014, Ayaan was diagnosed with stage-one cancer. After surgery and chemotherapy, he has recovered and is fit today.
