Biography

After debuting with Om Shanti Om, Deepika went on to deliver more memorable performances and impressed audiences with her versatile roles. In recent times, she has won over audiences with films like Cocktail, Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram-Leela and Piku. Deepika was born to acclaimed badminton player, Prakash Padukone and his wife, Ujjala, a travel agent. She spent the first year of her life in Copenhagen, where she was born and then moved to Bengaluru, with her family. She completed her schooling from Sophia High School, Bengaluru and enrolled at Mount Carmel College for further studies. From an early age, she was focused on sports and excelled at badminton. She also played national level tournaments while in school. Deepika enrolled at the Indira Gandhi National Open University for her graduation but quit soon after, to take up a career in modelling. Her first ramp walk at the Vogue Institute of Fashion Technology, Bangalore in 2003 was a success. She had also appeared in commercials as a child and won her first award in modeling in 2004 when she was awarded the Society Young Achievers’ Award and later won the Model of the Year award in the fifth Annual Kingfisher fashion event. In 2006, she won two awards as the Female model of the year in commercials and Fresh face of the year award. In 2006, she stepped into films with the Kannada film, Aishwarya. Following the success of her modelling days, she was cast in ‘Naam Hai Tera’ music video of Himesh Reshammiya. It gave Deepika Padukone the real break when she was spotted by filmmaker Farah Khan who cast her opposite Shahrukh Khan in her film Om Shanti Om (2007). She also won the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award for her role in the film Om Shanti Om. Her next film, Bachna Ae Haseeno (2008), was a commercial success. Padukone also faced her share of failure with commercially unsuccessful films like Chandni Chowk to China (2009) and Karthik Calling Karthik (2010). 2012 marked a turning point in her career when she starred alongside Saif Ali Khan and Diana Penty in the film Cocktail. Her portrayal of the wild, insecure and fiercely loyal Veronica, earned her great reviews from audiences and critics. She followed it up with more successful films like Race 2 (2013), Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani (2013), Chennai Express (2013) and Goliyon ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013). Based on Romeo and Juliet, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Ram-Leela, won her the Filmfare Award for the Best Actress. Her latest film Piku (2015), the story of a father-daughter duo on a road trip, has won over audiences and critics. Her upcoming films include Tamasha (2015) and Bajirao Mastani (2015). Deepika started dating, actor Ranbir Kapoor, in 2008 and also tattooed his initials on the nape of her neck. However the couple split up a year after the relationship. She also has a sister named Anisha, who is a golfer. Deepika stays in Prabhadevi, Mumbai.
