Biography

Anushka, who made her debut opposite to Shah Rukh Khan, has emerged as one of the leading ladies in the industry. She won over audiences with her performances in Band Baaja Baaraat and NH 10 and has acquired a huge fan following within a short span of seven years. Born in Ayodhya and raised in Bangalore, Sharma is an alumni of the Army School and received a degree in arts from Mount Carmel College. Her father, Colonel Ajay Kumar Sharma, hails from Uttar Pradesh and her mother, Ashima is a Garhwali. Her brother, Karnesh Sharma, is in the merchant navy and co-founded the production house, Clean Slate Films in 2014 with Anushka. Anushka started modelling while she was in college and moved to Mumbai after her graduation to pursue a career in modeling. She got her first big break as a model for fashion designer Wendell Rodricks in 2007. She then moved on to do commercials for Silk & Shine, Whisper, Nathella Jewelry and Fiat Palio. She bagged a three-film deal with YRF, debuting opposite SRK in Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi (2008). She earned critical acclaim for it and won the Star Guilds Award for the best female debut of the year. Sharma then starred in YRF’s Badmaash Company (2010), a crime caper and another YRF romantic comedy, Band Baaja Baaraat (2010) with debutant Ranveer Singh. The last one earned her the IIFA, Dadasaheb Phalke Academy and Star Guild Award for best actress. Next in line was Nikhil Advani’s Patiala House (2011), which failed at the Box Office. Her performance in Ladies Vs. Ricky Bahl (2011) was appreciated and the film did moderately well. She then starred in the Shah Rukh - Katrina starrer Jab Tak Hai Jaan (2012) for which she also won the Filmfare award for the best supporting actress. However, her next film, Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola (2013), a satire, was a huge disappointment. She won laurels with Rajkumar Hirani’s PK (2014), where she shared screen space with Aamir Khan, followed by Navdeep Singh’s woman centric thriller NH10 (2015), which she had also produced. Her next projects were Anurag Kashyap’s period drama Bombay Velvet (2015) and Zoya Akhtar’s Dil Dhadakne Do (2015). While Bombay Velvet bombed at the Box Office, Dil Dhadakne Do turned out to be a hit. Her upcoming film is Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, which is expected to release in 2016. Anushka has won the GQ Excellence Award (2011), Hello! Face of the Year Award (2012) and Vogue Beauty of the Year Award (2015). Among her endorsements, are the brands TVS Scooty, Pantene, Nivea, Elle 18 cosmetics, Bru and 7 Up. Anushka is in a relationship with cricketer Virat Kohli and she resides in Mumbai.
