With a career spanning over three decades, Anil Kapoor is a veteran Indian film actor and producer in national and international cinema along with being the recipient of the National Award for Best Actor. Born in Chembur, Mumbai, in a film clan, where Anil’s father Surinder Kapoor was a noted film producer and his elder brother, Boney Kapoor is a producer and younger brother, Sanjay Kapoor is an actor. Anil completed his studies from Our Lady of Perpetual Succour High School and St. Xavier’s College. Anil made his Bollywood debut as a child artist in the film, Tu Payal Mein Geet (1971), however the film did not release theatrically. He made his debut as an adult with the film, Hamaare Tumhare (1979) in a small role followed by Shakti (1982) and Woh Saat Din (1983) for which he received critical acclaim. During this time, he also made his Telugu film debut with Vamsa Vruksham (1980) and Kannada film, Pallavi Anu Pallavi (1983). He got breakthrough recognition with the film, Mashaal (1984) for which he received the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor, followed by successful films like Saaheb (1985), Meri Jung (1985), Chameli Ki Shaadi (1986), Janbaaz (1986), Karma (1986) and Insaaf Ki Awaaz (1986). His fame and success took a sky-high route with the cult blockbuster Mr. India (1987) where is role is remembered even today, followed by Thikana (1987), Ram-Avtar (1988), Sone Pe Suhaga (1988), Tezaab (1988) for which he received his second Filmfare Award, but first in the Best Actor category and further success with Ram Lakhan (1989), Eeshwar (1989), Rakhwala (1989), Parinda (1989), Awaargi (1990), Kishen Kanhaiya (1990), Beta (1992) for which he won his third Filmfare Award, Khel (1992), Laadla (1994), 1942: A Love Story (1994), Loafer (1996), Judaai (1997), Virasat (1997), for which he received his fourth Filmfare Award, Deewana Mastana (1997), Hum Aapke Dil Mein Rehte Hain (1999), Biwi No. 1 (1999), Taal (1999) for which he won his fifth Filmfare Award, Bulandi (2000), Pukar (2000) for which he won the National Award for Best Actor, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai (2000) . He later worked in critically acclaimed films like Nayak (2001), Om Jai Jagadish (2002), Rishtey (2002), Armaan (2003), Calcutta Mail (2003), Musafir (2004), My Wife’s Murder (2005) and Chocolate (2005). His performances in Badhaai Ho Badhaai (2002), No Entry (2005), Welcome (2007), Race (2008) and Tashan (2008) further enhanced his comic and action prowess. Anil did his first international film, Slumdog Millionaire (2008) in a pivotal role, where the film not only became a blockbuster but also won several awards including eight Academy Awards followed by small roles in Hollywood TV Series 24 (2010) and Tom Cruise starrer, Mission IMpossible: Ghost Protocol (2011). Anil made his debut as a producer with the film My Wife’s Murder (2005) followed by the critically acclaimed and National Award winning film, Gandhi, My Father (2007). He also had flops as a producer with Short Kut: The Con Is On (2009) and No Problem (2010) along with moderate success in Aisha (2010) and his latest successful production, Khoobsurat (2014). His latest films include Race 2 (2013), Shootout at Wadala (2013), Dil Dhadakne Do (2015) and Welcome Back (2015). He also adapted the Hollywood series 24, and made the Indian version of it, titled 24 (2013-present) which received widespread critical acclaim and commercial success. It’s second season is being filmed currently. Apart from acting and producing, Anil has done small singing stints in films like Chameli Ki Shaadi, Hamara Dil Aapke Paas Hai and had one full album, Welcome with co-singer Salma Agha and composer Bappi Lahiri in 1986. Anil is married to Sunita Kapoor, a former costume designer, and together they have two daughters, actress Sonam Kapoor, film producer Rhea Kapoor and a son, Harshvardhan Kapoor, an upcoming actor.
