Biography

Amitabh Bachchan is widely regarded as one of the greatest actors in the history of Indian cinema. Amitabh has won many major awards in his career, including three National Film Awards as Best Actor, fourteen Filmfare Awards and many awards at international film festivals. The Government of India awarded him with the Padma Shri in 1984and the Padma Bhushan in 2001 for his contributions towards the arts. He also received France's highest civilian honour, the Knight of the Legion of Honour in 2007 for his "exceptional career in the world of cinema and beyond". Career Amitabh made his film debut in 1969 as a voice narrator in Mrinal Sen's National Award winning film Bhuvan Shome. He made his first acting debut in Saat Hindustani. However, Amitabh came to prominence with Zanjeer (1973) where he earned the popular moniker of the ‘Angry Young Man’. Films like Deewar (1975), Sholay (1975), Don (1978) and Shaan (1980) helped him earn an iconic status in Hindi cinema. Amitabh made his Hollywood debut with The Great Gasby (2013). In addition to acting, Amitabh has worked as a playback singer (known for his deep baritone voice), film producer and television presenter. He also had a stint in politics in the 1980s. Amitabh faced a slump in his career during the early 90s. His releases were major flops, his production company went bankrupt and he was involved in a major political scandal. The year 2000 marked a resurrection in his career with Kaun Banega Crorepati, the Indian version of the game show Who Wants to Be a Millionaire? Personal life Amitabh Bachchan was born in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. He is the son of Harivansh Rai Bachchan, a Hindi poet, and Teji Bachchan. He is married to actress Jaya Bhaduri. The couple has two children, Shweta and Abhishek.
